Having the the novel the Don is Dead and finding very interesting I jumped at the chance to get the movie. I have to admit I was disappointed some what, but suprised at how faithful it is to the original novel.
Set in 1970 the film depicts the Mafia in a state of disarray, years of inactivity have made their soldiers forget how to fight, kill and defend the families they serve. So when a war brakes out between two rival families the oldest established family finds itself being torn to shreds by a bunch of mechanics turned hitmen.
The film starts with the death of Don Paulo, th strongest Don in the underworld. His son robert Forster is set to take command but at meeting of "the commission" it is decided that he is too young and so his empire is devided between Don Angelo (Quinn) and Don Bernardo who is in prison. Forester's friend the Fargo brothers (Fredrick Forrester ans Al Lettieri) are allowed to operate on their own. What the commission doesn't know is that a middleman called Orlando is working to set the two families against each other.
Orlando discovers that Don Angelo has an affair with Forster's girlfriend informing him so he beats her to a pulp in retaliation. Don Angelo orders him rubbed out but things don't go to plan and he survives. Now begins a war where sides are a matter of life and death, and there is every thing to lose.
