Product description
From the Publisher
Duck and Hippo in the Rainstorm is as much a rainy-day adventure as it is a celebration of the differences between the two friends. Duck may be small, and Hippo may be large, but together they can take on anything. When the windy weather leads the two friends to become separated, their worry feels genuine. A gentle chase ensues. But Duck and Hippo never give up on each other, just as the best of friends never do, and readers are rewarded with their safe return home.
Duck and Hippo in the Rainstorm is the perfect book for curling up with your little one on a rainy day or any other time. With plenty of fun sound words, appealing artwork, and a dose of humor and adventure, bestselling author Jonathan London and illustrator Andrew Joyner have created an endearing pair in Duck and Hippo. I hope you and your child will fall in love with them, as I have, and will want to join them on all their adventures.

About the authors
I was raised a Navy Brat and moved every two or three years when I was growing up. Now I live in one place and travel to lots of other places. I started writing poems in college, got a M.A. in History, performed in a modern dance company, traveled the world, got married, had two sons, and when I started telling my boys, Aaron and Sean, stories I realized that I could write for children. My first two books came out in the same week, in 1992, THIRTEEN MOONS ON TURTLE'S BACK and THE LION WHO HAD ASTHMA, soon followed by FROGGY GETS DRESSED. These books are still in print. FROGGY GETS DRESSED was the first of over twenty-eight Froggy books. The most recent one is FROGGY'S LEMONADE STAND (May 15, 2018) FROGGY
PICKS A PUMPKIN and FROGGY BUILDS A SNOWMAN will follow in 2019. Then FROGGY FOR PRESIDENT! will be published early in 2020.
My Froggy books are funny and kids love them. But I also write other kinds of books, including wildlife books: HIPPOS ARE HUGE! OTTERS LOVE TO PLAY! (river otters). And more recently: PUP THE SEA OTTER (illustrated by my son Sean London). PUP THE SEA OTTER won the 2017 NATIONAL OUTDOOR BOOK AWARD (NOBA), the 2017 National Science Teacher's Association Outstanding Children's Trade Book Award, and the 2018 ILA/CBC Children's Choice Award
My most recent wildlife book is LITTLE FOX IN THE SNOW (NOV. 13 2018), featured in
the Wall Street Journal Seasons Greetings children's book section.
I've also written a middle grade novel trilogy: Aaron's Wilderness Trilogy: DESOLATION CANYON, BELLA BELLA, and GRIZZLY PEAK, all illustrated by my son, Sean London, who is an animator.
I started a new picture book series with DUCK AND HIPPO IN THE RAINSTORM, followed
by DUCK AND HIPPO LOST AND FOUND. DUCK AND HIPPO GIVE THANKS came out on 8/20/18, to be followed by DUCK AND HIPPO THE SECRET VALENTINE Dec. 18 2018. I've published over 120 books since 1992, but now I only write poems for myself. My sons and my wife, Maureen, are my constant inspirations. But I'm also inspired by young children, dogs, mountains, rivers, stars, trees, great cities, deserts, jungles, great food, dance, art, some sports, and the moon. And if anybody asks, Froggy c'est moi--but he's also Aaron and Sean, and every kid I've ever met. Flop flop flop!

Normally I’m not the greatest fan of reviews for First books, which appear basically 2 minutes after you can download the title, but this is a picture book and to give this book a one star rating claiming the text is too small, is just not fair and not true.
I read the picture book on my small Fire 7 and had no problem to enlarge the text with a simple double click on it. I admit, my eyesight isn’t too bad, but I need reading glasses and was able to enjoy the book together with my little niece without them.
You can also read the eBook on a computer or laptop with Windows 8 or above installed.
Of course, I agree, if your eyesight is very poor, even the enlarged text might not be sufficient.
Best is probably to use the look inside option, (simply scroll up and click on the book cover) to check out if the layout appeals to you before buying Duck and Hippo, which saves you raising up a Rainstorm.
The story itself I found very cheerful and illustrator Andrew Joyner has simply done a splendid job.
Duck invites her friend Hippo for a walk in early spring and it’s raining cats and dogs.
Hippo is prepared to give it a go, but just if his friend shares her umbrella with him. Duck is happy to do so, but try as they might, it doesn’t work for both of them to stay dry. At least not, if they walk side by side……
It’s lovely to see how the two friends try and work together to deal with the problem, that they are both completely different. The two offer a good and encouraging example for children.
Duck and Hippo also care very much for each other.
Duck suggests, they turn the brolly upside down and go for a fun rollercoaster ride on the river. Hippo is all set for it, but a mighty Hippo usually needs a bigger boat and slowly, they start to sink. Suddenly, Hippo has vanished and now Duck is very concerned and looks out for her friend.
Luckily, Hippo is well and happy and just a bit soaked. (I must admit, at this point, I started to wonder, why a totally soaked Hippo still desperately tries to stay dry under an umbrella.)
As soon as they are back on dry land, there’s a huge gust of wind which sends the umbrella flying with poor duck hanging on just by the tip of a feather.
Hippo tries his best to keep up the chase, but will Duck have a safe landing?
Duck and Hippo in the Rainstorm is a hugely enjoyable story about caring and sharing and working together as a team to overcome problems and differences. The artwork is very beautiful and my niece had a lot of fun looking at the pictures.

A story of friendship through adversity.
A good start to a dialogue of friendship and fun/helpfulness.
A book I'll read to my grandchildren.
