I do accept that Nic Cage does a varied amount of films but I think he always puts in a good performance given some of the martial he has to work with. Apart from the recent oddity that is Left Behind. Man that was weird but I still quite enjoyed it and have a copy (see my review). It is Cage's worst film, even I will say, being a dedicated Cage fan. I will however stand up to some of his unfairly judged films that are far better than they are given credit for. I won't go into detail of the films because I am reviewing Dying Of The Light, but will list thise films that you should check out despite mostly negative reviews. They are: Tokarev, Drive Angry, Season Of The Witch, Stolen, Justice and Trespass. But having said that you must try the two best films he has made recently, Joe and The Frozen Ground.
Anyway, Dying Of The Light is a quirky little film that suits Cage's eccentric performances. He plays a CIA agent Even Lake who falls Ill with the early on sets of Dementia. However, one his old nemesis who was believed dead is now suspected to be still alive. Lake takes on the case assisted by a young CIA agent, Anton Yelchin who is terrible. He simpy can't act and spends his time in this film doing a impression of Nicolas Cage!
Cage puts in an above average performance going off on one from time to time in a rage of anger. I love it when Cage is like this, all unpredictable and on edge. The film could have been better if they had put more into the story about the bad guy instead of just having him lerking in the background. There is a lot more to be had in this, but I suspect it was heavily edited out. Well, that's the feeling I got when I watched it. What holds this film together though is the performance Cage gives and the story, well three quarters of it anyway. It's just the last act that seems a bit rushed which was a shame.
I really want to give this a 4 star rating but have to stick to 3 stars because of what the film should have been. But rest assure, it's 3 top quality gold stars! Take no notice of the low foreheads who are nothing but negative vibe merchants and please give this film a chance.
