Possibly my favourite from the first 5 books. The tension builds slowly and intensely along with the weather. Items and events are described with a level of detail that lets you imagine the scene in great detail without becoming dull. Not ‘high literature’, but nonetheless a really compelling and enjoyable story.

Too long and too slow. Little, but predictable action. The ending was well done; however the story concludes somewhat disappointing.

In some parts the author goes into nauseating detail and other parts takes heroic leaps in the story line. Overall a well researched and written novel. He’s good.

Jack reacher books never disappoint.
What I am really happy with is the speedy delivery by Amazon.
I ordered my books on a Wednesday and they were ready to be picked up at the P.O. And I live in a small town not the city.
Well done Amazon.

I love Reacher. Despite the fact that each book is a little similar they are all entertaining and if I'm in need of a good read I know there is always another jack Reacher novel to download - I think I still have about 5 to go. Discovered this series after running out of James Paterson, Kathy Reichs and my usual preferences and they have kept me going this year.

Good Reacher book. It's my 6th in a row. As a completionist, I am doing them in chronological order! They are getting better, and more contemporary.

Binge reading

I have been on a Jack Reacher binge over the last few weeks, I have been at sea and they are great books to read when you come of shift. Great literature they are not, but they are fun and page turning. The endless detailed descriptions of locations are sometimes a bit irritating and do little to add to moving the plot forward, and sometimes feel that they have been added as filler so the book makes the requisite number of pages. That being said, if one skims the the unnecessary bits the books are still fantastic escapism.

Number five in the Reacher series written by Lee Child. I have read the previous four in order after being recommended the books by a colleague. Number five, 'Echo Burning' I think is the best so far.
Don't get me wrong each one of the earlier four is a good escape reality read. They are all written in a flowing easy to read prose style. They all twist and turn into ultimate success for our hero. They all engage the reader in a nice involving story that never gets boring, although it has to be said the stories do require some flights of imagination to jump across the holes. But the holes are all excusable and if approached with an open mind can be strangely entertaining.
Book five tightens the story line up considerably, it makes more sense. I noticed this with book four 'The Visitor' and book four in my opinion saw the author come of age somewhat with his grip on the complete novel much more noticeable than the first three.
Book five 'Echo Burning' improves again. I feel it really does come closer to the perfect thriller.
I have book six on order and have become a Jack Reacher fan. There are quite some books to go in the series with the author still writing as well. If they all deliver like those I have read so far it will provide me with hours of pleasure.
Could it be that we all need a Jack Reacher in our lives?
I give four stars because it is a good book. Five stars is perfection and if book six improves again on book five I do believe I may be giving the five stars out.

It's a book about Jack Reacher; what else there to say?
The story line is typical for a Jack Reacher novel. There are good guys, bad guys, a petite bit of fluff that is in danger, dodgy local law enforcement and one or two violent scenes. Perfect read before one retires to bed and dreaming you are 6ft 5in and have a chest size the same a barrel of stout!

I've read all of Lee Child's books and some like this one for a second time..This one has a bit more depth in the story. There are three strands. Firstly there the young Hispanic woman who gives Reacher a lift.she has a story of abuse from her husband currently in prison but shortly to be released and she wants Reacher to protect her or kill her husband. Then there is a team of killers there to fulfill a contract. Finally there is the 25 year old crime involving the random killing of Mexicans crossing the Border. Allegedly killed by Border patrol. Good story telling and character drawing and a really good read.

Dull slooooooooow burner that picked up towards the end.

I understand why this was £1.99 and the other books are £5 or more. This was achingly dull for the first third of the book with long descriptive narratives that would send a glass eye to sleep but I persevered. It slowly gained pace with most of the plot and tension in the last third of the book. It was a good story eventually but I suggest you read the others first.
