Interesting features, but very slow!

It has interesting features, does the job, but I am under the impression that the device is from 5 years ago. When you touch the screen to access a menu, you will have to wait a good two seconds for the new screen to appear which is sign of an extremely poor chip. The voice recognition is really good. The screen itself is ok but the light it generates at night will bother you if you are sensitive to full darkness

Was poor, but customer service did help

Bought this hoping for some Australian content which is sadly lacking. Keeps cycling through US baseball, basketball and crime news which is both irrelevant and depressing. Sure I can tell Alexa to play local radio but the video content is all US and the settings (so far) do not allow the ABC (the Australian one!) or anything else local. The pic shows the message received when clicking on the ABC option for video content - smarmy.
It looks like a clunky clock radio - really I prefer my sleek Echo Dot as this offers nothing extra except annoying visuals. Sound quality is good but again, no better than the Dot.
Edit to add: Customer Service emailed me within minutes of this review and changed my settings; this makes the device much more useful with local news content. I still prefer my Dot but this will now be good value.

Had high hopes for this device, but it has let me down. Quality wise this Echo device is good, the voice is good as well and I don’t have to prefix each command with OK or HEY. But my main issue is that it is USA centric. It constantly scrolls down US news, info on US movies, shows and sports but I cannot get it to be Australia based. I have ensured I have the correct location set on the device, on my AU account and on my US Amazon account but it makes no difference. I can’t set the news to my state, I can’t connect to my YouTube music account (but I can connect to Spotify and others if I paid another monthly fee). Sure I can get a 10 minute News Flash but that is all.
If Amazon want this device to be used outside of USA then they need to change these issues, so at this stage it is relegated to being glorified digital alarm clock.

Picture display is good but suggestions intrusive

The ever-changing beautiful nature images are fine and the clock figures do not seriously obscure these as they do on the Echo Show 8; but the constant suggestions from Alexa are irritating. I don't want Alexa to keep asking me whether I want to add bananas to my shopping list or to suggest self-improvement tips. I was able to get rid of most of the silly text information and suggestions from Alexa but these silly suggestions appear to be unremovable. I just want to see beautiful nature images on my Echo Show screen and a clock that does not obscure them. This is where Google's Nest Hub is a superior device. It has a beautiful 7-inch screen and allows the owner to add only information that is useful to the owner. Unfortunately, the google 7-inch is much more expensive.

I did not expect to love this little thing, but I do. I was devastated when my 12yr old Sony Dream Machine with the 7” screen died. The choice was go with a Google Nest or Amazon Echo. Amazon had a good sale on the Echo 5 so it won and I’m pleasantly surprised.

I did read all the reviews and was concerned about the recognition issues but I don’t find any. I can call “Alexa” from across my dark bedroom and it lights up the way to bed.

After turning off the lights her screen darkens within seconds to show my customised clock settings which aren’t bright, basically a black screen with large digital clock in red numbers.

Playing music is easy and usually plays the right specific track asked for. Sound quality is better than my previous machine and no preloading files necessary. So sweet! Same with my streaming channels.

The alarm can be set to specific days which is great as I work regular shifts part time so no more turning it on and off depending on days.

I’ve synced my iOS calendar to it so it tells me what appointments I have for the day. So no more forgotten appointments.

So overall pretty happy, I’ll probably buy a larger version later for my bedroom and shift this one to the kitchen when I do.

Voice recognition a little slow, can be very hit and miss on whether or not it will get requests right or even recognise your voice. Built in apps/functions limited, for example the YouTube app is just the mobile webpage which is poor. Some of the design and functions seem too complicated than what they should be and often feel very slow or delayed. Ie. setting up connections with third party apps/smart devices such as Ring cameras.

The sound was better than what I expected from a small device. Had no issue with it used it as a table top clock, the only thing I dislike about this is that the processing power seem a bit lacking. It is fine when using voice commands but navigating and scrolling through the menu on the touchscreen is quite laggy.

I gotta say I love this device and I have rated it high, I think the average person will get better use out of it.

My issue and I think it is an issue between my wifi Access points and the echo show itself. I have 2 echo shows and 3 Ubiquiti Access points in my house, both of the echo shows connect for a few days then drop out requiring a power cycle to connect back up. I only have this issue with the echo shows so I'm at a loss because I would like to not have to power cycle them. I assume most people will not encounter this issue so I still rated them high because I love them when they are working but without wifi they do not function so I only need to power cycle them and they are up and running again for a day or two

This is a nice addition to somewhere like the kitchen, somewhere where you may want to add some apps and steam something, it supports a few good Australian apps like ABC and I'm sure Netflix too, just don't expect fast response from this, but it works fine if your not expecting it to work like your mobile phone. (Voice responses are good, can link with Ring video doorbell.)

Undecided on whether this was a need purchase, however, after using it i couldn’t imagine not having it. Aesthetically pleasing. Was able to set up own images as backgrounds. It actually listens well unlike Siri, who drives me insane! Puts out decent sound for the size. Favourite feature is that you can ask Alexa to adjust the sound level. Plays news updates. We keep in kitchen, used as a radio daily. Highly recommend, Makes it very tempting to switch from an Apple household.

We hadn't thought of one feature - but It has turned out very handy as an intercom between other Alexa Echo units in the house.
