Interesting features, but very slow!

It has interesting features, does the job, but I am under the impression that the device is from 5 years ago. When you touch the screen to access a menu, you will have to wait a good two seconds for the new screen to appear which is sign of an extremely poor chip. The voice recognition is really good. The screen itself is ok but the light it generates at night will bother you if you are sensitive to full darkness

Was poor, but customer service did help

Bought this hoping for some Australian content which is sadly lacking. Keeps cycling through US baseball, basketball and crime news which is both irrelevant and depressing. Sure I can tell Alexa to play local radio but the video content is all US and the settings (so far) do not allow the ABC (the Australian one!) or anything else local. The pic shows the message received when clicking on the ABC option for video content - smarmy.
It looks like a clunky clock radio - really I prefer my sleek Echo Dot as this offers nothing extra except annoying visuals. Sound quality is good but again, no better than the Dot.
Edit to add: Customer Service emailed me within minutes of this review and changed my settings; this makes the device much more useful with local news content. I still prefer my Dot but this will now be good value.

I thought I'd buy the Echo 5 2nd generation just out of curiosity. I'm really not into new technology. Well.. all of this has changed. The Echo 5 is an outstanding device & I've grown to really like Alexa she's become a real companion that doesn't argue with you guys & she does bring a smile to your face & quite frankly life wouldn't be the same without her now that I've had her by my bedside for a couple of months.
I've added another three Alexa devices to my collection I'm finding the whole experience so enjoyable & she really is helpful. Just ask a question & you've the answer which makes life so much easier. From an alarm to reminders she never lets you down. Putting out the rubbish every week I'd tend to forget on occasions no more with Alexa. Add Amazon music for $4 99 a month for one device & what ever comes to mind in music she simply plays. It's excellent.
Ignore all the negative reviews about this product it genuinely is a really good buy from Amazon & a whole lot of fun. You'll not regret your decision purchasing her. As for single people she's a must too you've always somebody to talk to. I'm learning words in another language that's how good she is for fun.

Well done to everybody involved at Amazon for making such a device available to the public as well they deserve a mention.

I did not expect to love this little thing, but I do. I was devastated when my 12yr old Sony Dream Machine with the 7” screen died. The choice was go with a Google Nest or Amazon Echo. Amazon had a good sale on the Echo 5 so it won and I’m pleasantly surprised.

I did read all the reviews and was concerned about the recognition issues but I don’t find any. I can call “Alexa” from across my dark bedroom and it lights up the way to bed.

After turning off the lights her screen darkens within seconds to show my customised clock settings which aren’t bright, basically a black screen with large digital clock in red numbers.

Playing music is easy and usually plays the right specific track asked for. Sound quality is better than my previous machine and no preloading files necessary. So sweet! Same with my streaming channels.

The alarm can be set to specific days which is great as I work regular shifts part time so no more turning it on and off depending on days.

I’ve synced my iOS calendar to it so it tells me what appointments I have for the day. So no more forgotten appointments.

So overall pretty happy, I’ll probably buy a larger version later for my bedroom and shift this one to the kitchen when I do.

I bought 2 of these today to have in my kids' rooms so they can listen to music and books from audible.

Firstly, I find it a bit slow to respond, however I can live with it.
My major problem with it is, I can't seem to select what song to play by using the touch screen, I have to use voice commands. I don't always know the song I want to play, I want to browse for it on the device - but I can't! And I can't select playlists either. It's similar with the books. You can use a voice command or you have select the book from your phone - you can't scroll through on the device. Well, I'd like the kids to independently use the device without needing my phone all the time.
Also, I can't seem to disable all videos on the device! There needs to be a restriction option to disable all videos. I don't want my kids to be able to watch videos on the device whenever they want.
At this stage I'm a bit disappointed :(

The most stupid, useless electronic that you can buy.
Basically it doesn’t know NOTHING that you ask!
“Hum, I’m not sure…” is the most common phrase that you will ever hear.
It is completely useless, when this ignorant piece of garbage “knows” the answer, it takes ages to research and display, giving you plenty of time to wait, loose your patience, google it on your phone and get the answer before this garbage!
It came to a point where I was only using to turn the lights on and off, and even that seems to be an impossible task for this crap! As usual, it takes ages to act on the request, when it does it correctly.
Last time I ask to have the lights on and no response, after repeating “alexa, lights on” for the 15 time, this garbage said it didn’t knew this music and started to play a podcast instead. 🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬
What happened after, you can see in the pictures.
Even though I should have asked for a refund of this crap product, I’m glad I destroyed this garbage.

This is my second echo show 5, to add to an ever growing collection of dots and an Echo Show 8. Setup is simple - when purchasing from Amazon most of the setup requirement is already done. I love the "play music everywhere" option - I can listen to calming music throughout my house. I use it to remind myself of things I need to do, I can add to the shopping list wherever I am in the house (I have a dot in the bathroom ), and then when shopping check things off in the app. You can group items into rooms and then turn on/off all items in that room with one command. The intercom function is great for calling the kids to dinner. I can turn on the kettle with a simple voice command. It's amazing what these devices can do.

So much fun to use. Great to set mood lighting but also makes great morning routines by playing a song we choose, turning the lights on low and then telling us the news headlines, weather and traffic report!

Alexa also plays relaxing music and calls our dogs by their name when she hears them barking.

So many fun little games and functions.

We bought an Echo 8 as well but I feel this one has better voice recognition and the ability to drop in via camera is not available on the 8.

My first foray into the smart home market, the novelty has worn off but it does still play some role in our house especially with reminders, recipes and music. Very good speaker, no 35mm jack which is a shame and only real negative. The touch screen is not fantastic either

Not sure if it is due to the latest update in AU but the screen is hot even though no music was playing. Just stand by. Support already asked to send the previous unit back but I did ask if this is normal behaviour. Given this is doing the same, it looks like it is.
