Interesting features, but very slow!

It has interesting features, does the job, but I am under the impression that the device is from 5 years ago. When you touch the screen to access a menu, you will have to wait a good two seconds for the new screen to appear which is sign of an extremely poor chip. The voice recognition is really good. The screen itself is ok but the light it generates at night will bother you if you are sensitive to full darkness

Was poor, but customer service did help

Bought this hoping for some Australian content which is sadly lacking. Keeps cycling through US baseball, basketball and crime news which is both irrelevant and depressing. Sure I can tell Alexa to play local radio but the video content is all US and the settings (so far) do not allow the ABC (the Australian one!) or anything else local. The pic shows the message received when clicking on the ABC option for video content - smarmy.
It looks like a clunky clock radio - really I prefer my sleek Echo Dot as this offers nothing extra except annoying visuals. Sound quality is good but again, no better than the Dot.
Edit to add: Customer Service emailed me within minutes of this review and changed my settings; this makes the device much more useful with local news content. I still prefer my Dot but this will now be good value.

Don't purchase if you want to use your own pictures as the background!

I spent a good two hours almost crying I was so angry. From all the videos I saw online you could put your own family pictures at the clockface. What they don't tell you is that the entire clockface flickers between picture changes. So for that brief 2 seconds, it's just a black screen before fading up to the next clockface.
IT IS SO ANNOYING! LIKE OH MY GOD!
I tried even just putting one picture in my amazon app and it STILL FLICKERS with just one image! every minute it will fade to black then come back with the same clockface it has a second ago.
There needs to be a feature where you can select slideshow mode of static mode!
I don't need my bedside clock flickering all night long. IT'S INFURIATING!
I had to settle on one of their images that don't even represent my style so it would stop the flickering.

Okay But Lacking a Basic Feature

Works just as good as any of the Echo's, screen is okay, nice to have clock and weather on display, you can watch Youtube via the built in web browser, and it seems to play pretty good, but I find the touch screen very slow to respond, it feels underpowered when navigating its menu, but voice response is on par with Echo Dot's.

The main reason I gave it 3 stars, is the lacking of any 3.5mm audio output jack, the built in speaker like all of these devices sounds like tweeter in a cardboard box, I have tried some generic USB Audio DAC's and none of them work, so its use case is very limited.

I recommend this to people that would like a nice bedside or office desk clock and don't really care about audio quality, but if you want this for a Kitchen setting, I would recommend going for the larger Show 8.

I thought I'd buy the Echo 5 2nd generation just out of curiosity. I'm really not into new technology. Well.. all of this has changed. The Echo 5 is an outstanding device & I've grown to really like Alexa she's become a real companion that doesn't argue with you guys & she does bring a smile to your face & quite frankly life wouldn't be the same without her now that I've had her by my bedside for a couple of months.
I've added another three Alexa devices to my collection I'm finding the whole experience so enjoyable & she really is helpful. Just ask a question & you've the answer which makes life so much easier. From an alarm to reminders she never lets you down. Putting out the rubbish every week I'd tend to forget on occasions no more with Alexa. Add Amazon music for $4 99 a month for one device & what ever comes to mind in music she simply plays. It's excellent.
Ignore all the negative reviews about this product it genuinely is a really good buy from Amazon & a whole lot of fun. You'll not regret your decision purchasing her. As for single people she's a must too you've always somebody to talk to. I'm learning words in another language that's how good she is for fun.

Well done to everybody involved at Amazon for making such a device available to the public as well they deserve a mention.

Let down by software

I was after a nice big bedside clock to replace my Echo Dot (that ended up being smaller than I was hoping so the clock is often hard to see).
The hardware of this device is pretty good, nice looking like most "Echo" devices. However it is let down by awful software.
I configured the device to show a clock, that's all. But what would actually happen is the clock would fade out, and then snap back in to the.... you guessed it, clock. Fade out, snap back, fade out snap back.
Now, in the corner of your eye, this is somewhat psychosis inducing.
Seems to be a whole lot of "workarounds" on the internet to "fix" it. But none that actually worked.
The only other problem is the general sluggishness of the menu's which suggests the CPU is under-powered, or again, the software is poorly optimized.
I used it for about 3 hours before I packet it up again and returned it. I'll stick with my hard to see Echo Dot, thanks.

The sound was better than what I expected from a small device. Had no issue with it used it as a table top clock, the only thing I dislike about this is that the processing power seem a bit lacking. It is fine when using voice commands but navigating and scrolling through the menu on the touchscreen is quite laggy.

Great for having by the bed to watch that late-night catch up on youtube and take the early morning facetime from the sister. The voice command is not as good ass my Dot. It doesn't seem to understand my questions. I have to rephrase many things, and it is not as prompt as my dot hope the next firmware will address these issues. all and all a good product that is affordable with a camera
