4.0 out of 5 starsInteresting features, but very slow!
Reviewed in Australia on 10 June 2021
It has interesting features, does the job, but I am under the impression that the device is from 5 years ago. When you touch the screen to access a menu, you will have to wait a good two seconds for the new screen to appear which is sign of an extremely poor chip. The voice recognition is really good. The screen itself is ok but the light it generates at night will bother you if you are sensitive to full darkness

3.0 out of 5 starsWas poor, but customer service did help
Reviewed in Australia on 13 June 2021
Bought this hoping for some Australian content which is sadly lacking. Keeps cycling through US baseball, basketball and crime news which is both irrelevant and depressing. Sure I can tell Alexa to play local radio but the video content is all US and the settings (so far) do not allow the ABC (the Australian one!) or anything else local. The pic shows the message received when clicking on the ABC option for video content - smarmy.
It looks like a clunky clock radio - really I prefer my sleek Echo Dot as this offers nothing extra except annoying visuals. Sound quality is good but again, no better than the Dot.
Edit to add: Customer Service emailed me within minutes of this review and changed my settings; this makes the device much more useful with local news content. I still prefer my Dot but this will now be good value.

3.0 out of 5 stars Great if you live in the US, but anywhere else forget it.

Had high hopes for this device, but it has let me down. Quality wise this Echo device is good, the voice is good as well and I don’t have to prefix each command with OK or HEY. But my main issue is that it is USA centric. It constantly scrolls down US news, info on US movies, shows and sports but I cannot get it to be Australia based. I have ensured I have the correct location set on the device, on my AU account and on my US Amazon account but it makes no difference. I can’t set the news to my state, I can’t connect to my YouTube music account (but I can connect to Spotify and others if I paid another monthly fee). Sure I can get a 10 minute News Flash but that is all.
If Amazon want this device to be used outside of USA then they need to change these issues, so at this stage it is relegated to being glorified digital alarm clock.

2.0 out of 5 stars Don't purchase if you want to use your own pictures as the background!

I spent a good two hours almost crying I was so angry. From all the videos I saw online you could put your own family pictures at the clockface. What they don't tell you is that the entire clockface flickers between picture changes. So for that brief 2 seconds, it's just a black screen before fading up to the next clockface.
IT IS SO ANNOYING! LIKE OH MY GOD!
I tried even just putting one picture in my amazon app and it STILL FLICKERS with just one image! every minute it will fade to black then come back with the same clockface it has a second ago.
There needs to be a feature where you can select slideshow mode of static mode!
I don't need my bedside clock flickering all night long. IT'S INFURIATING!
I had to settle on one of their images that don't even represent my style so it would stop the flickering.

1.0 out of 5 stars Picture display is good but suggestions intrusive
Reviewed in Australia on 24 July 2021

The ever-changing beautiful nature images are fine and the clock figures do not seriously obscure these as they do on the Echo Show 8; but the constant suggestions from Alexa are irritating. I don't want Alexa to keep asking me whether I want to add bananas to my shopping list or to suggest self-improvement tips. I was able to get rid of most of the silly text information and suggestions from Alexa but these silly suggestions appear to be unremovable. I just want to see beautiful nature images on my Echo Show screen and a clock that does not obscure them. This is where Google's Nest Hub is a superior device. It has a beautiful 7-inch screen and allows the owner to add only information that is useful to the owner. Unfortunately, the google 7-inch is much more expensive.

3.0 out of 5 stars Okay But Lacking a Basic Feature
Reviewed in Australia on 21 July 2021

Works just as good as any of the Echo's, screen is okay, nice to have clock and weather on display, you can watch Youtube via the built in web browser, and it seems to play pretty good, but I find the touch screen very slow to respond, it feels underpowered when navigating its menu, but voice response is on par with Echo Dot's.

The main reason I gave it 3 stars, is the lacking of any 3.5mm audio output jack, the built in speaker like all of these devices sounds like tweeter in a cardboard box, I have tried some generic USB Audio DAC's and none of them work, so its use case is very limited.

I recommend this to people that would like a nice bedside or office desk clock and don't really care about audio quality, but if you want this for a Kitchen setting, I would recommend going for the larger Show 8.

1.0 out of 5 stars Worst bed side clock ever!
Reviewed in Australia on 7 December 2021
Colour Name: CharcoalVerified Purchase
BUGS!!!

The screen fades to black every few minutes. Night mode doesn't work reliably. Adaptive brightness: The screen doesn't dim or it doesn't brighten in the morning Clock faces disappear as per the photo.

And it is slow slow slow. The older echo spot was much snapier.

This is a replacement device and the exact same problems exist.

AVOID unless like me there are no other options

Eeehhh is the best word i can come up to describe this product.
Does it do the job i got it for? sometimes. When i set an alarm for everyday of the week for work it wont go off but if i set one individually everyday then it will work. Kind of defeats the purpose of why I got it. Also it dose not understand auzzies very well i end up just getting frustrated with it and using the screen. Worst is when the alarm is blaring first thing in the moring and it wont understand stamd me to turn the thing off.. i wouldnt not recommended it is just a fancy clock next to my bed actually not even fancy. Just a clock lol

2.0 out of 5 stars echo 5

This appliance has a major issue , if for instance you set an alarm , it operates as required, then 9 minutes later on it comes again without the same alarm criteria ( ie if you have set a radio station ) and nowhere in any documentation, web pages the echo itself can you find how to eliminate this problem. Frustrating is an understatement. If you are somewhat an experienced techno phobe then all good but someone like me with limited talent its a struggle, Disappointed.

2.0 out of 5 stars Its okay but it misses the mark for me
Reviewed in Australia on 30 July 2021

I bought 2 of these today to have in my kids' rooms so they can listen to music and books from audible.

Firstly, I find it a bit slow to respond, however I can live with it.
My major problem with it is, I can't seem to select what song to play by using the touch screen, I have to use voice commands. I don't always know the song I want to play, I want to browse for it on the device - but I can't! And I can't select playlists either. It's similar with the books. You can use a voice command or you have select the book from your phone - you can't scroll through on the device. Well, I'd like the kids to independently use the device without needing my phone all the time.
Also, I can't seem to disable all videos on the device! There needs to be a restriction option to disable all videos. I don't want my kids to be able to watch videos on the device whenever they want.
At this stage I'm a bit disappointed :(

3.0 out of 5 stars Unsure why I bothered
Reviewed in Australia on 13 May 2022

Really don’t know why I bought this. The sound is reasonable quality and you can listen to Amazon music and see Amazon video content but I can already do that on my phone or iPad and you still need either a smart phone or tablet of some kind to set up the Echo. It’s really an echo of an existing device on your wifi network hence the name. Could be good at allowing extra people access to content. It also does work with Google and YouTube quite well. I largely bought this to connect to a wifi security camera and it doesn’t actually do that despite the camera listed on Amazon Prime as an Amazon Alexa operable device but the Echo will not discover the camera so so I need this device ? Probably redundant given I have smart phone and iPad that can do everything this can do but better. A cheap way to give others in your home access to various things like your Amazon video, music and check weather, ask stupid questions and even does Google searched and other things if you have it set up with the App on a device or devices.
