4.0 out of 5 starsFar better than products from Google and Apple
Reviewed in Australia on 23 July 2021
My Echo Show 8 2nd Generation stopped working after only one month when the device froze on the last background nature scene. An upgrade from Amazon fixed the problem and my Echo Shoe 8 2nd Generation is now working fine.

Amazon's Alexa assistant and Amazon Music work together beautifully, and are far superior to anything Google provides with its Nest Hubs. I have two 7-inch Google Nest Hubs for their lovely pictures and the clock time but they are hopeless when it comes to convenience when playing music on request.

I bought the Apple Homepod Mini to play classical music from Idagio and it is a complete dud because it only works with Apple's more recent operating systems. My Mac OS "Sierra" system is dated 2017, and will not work with Apple's Homepod Mini. I cannot upgrade my Mac OS because I will lose applications that I need. I might as well throw the Apple product in the trash bin. Still on this point, I should mention that Amazon's Alexa is a far better assistant than Apple's Siri.

I strongly recommend the Amazon Echo Show 8 and Echo Show 5 2nd Generation if music playing on request, popular or classical, is important. These Amazon products are far superior in functionality to anything offered by Google or Apple.

1.0 out of 5 starsLimited functionality in Australie
Reviewed in Australia on 31 October 2021
Obviously made for the US market but has very limited functionality in the Australian market. I bought it for the ability to show recipes while I am cooking but it is virtually useless for that purpose as none of the recipe skills work in the Australian market. In a nutshell - complete waste of time.

1.0 out of 5 stars A huge dip in quality compared to the other Echo products

The voice recognition on this device is incredibly frustrating. Compared to our other Echo Dot Gen3 devices it pales in comparison and frequently fails to pick up triggers or commands. It also has an extremely frustrating differences with other Echo voice commands, where things like "alexa, stop" will not stop the media or music playing. The hands-free video selection process is painful compared to something like Siri on AppleTV. Also continually frustrating to open up any app like Zoom as the voice commands are inconsistent, like getting a 50/50 result for "alexa, open zoom" being opening the app or a voice command asking me to holler out a Zoom ID.

3.0 out of 5 stars User interface needs work

I wanted to use this device to act as an aux pass through for a Samsung M7 speaker, only to find this version deleted the 3.5mm port. Ok, I'll use the USB port with a dongle - but no, that port is only for maintenance. Even the brain dead iPhone gives you an alternative! FFS Then I tried to use it to run multiple timers at once for cooking, only to find there is no way to keep the timers on screen. I find that it often misses the verbal "computer" cue unless I exaggerate the pause between computer and whatever command I am giving. Please give us a way to stop it going back to ads and hints and other rubbish. (Yes I know there is a workaround but just allow a simple command to stay on the current screen, be it timers, smart device control or whatever. Also, please for the love of god give us a way to see the list of songs in a Spotify playlist and make choices out of the upcoming songs. Seems to be a great device let down by a crappy interface. On the up side, some of the skills are good, sound seems good and I like the look of the unit. Still deciding whether I should return it or keep it.

A great complement to the echo range. I have echo's dotted around the house but an 8 inch screen does make a huge difference. Accessibility and visuals make all the difference. Sound quality is great given the form factor. Extremely more convenient to see the time in the kitchen where it is placed. Actually seeing the timer is very handy. Video applications are accessible but voice command usability to navigate intuitively is lacking. An example is searching YouTube but then not able to accurately select the right video with voice commands is annoying. Have to use your hands. Voice commands to forward or rewind clips is not possible. Missing an Aux input is definitely a poor decision by Amazon to remove. Definitely get the stand, but as with most people's opinion it should have been include. Luckily I got the echo show 8 on special. Not worth it at original retail price.

5.0 out of 5 stars My new alarm clock and music player

I love that I can ask Alexa what the time is in a whisper and she whispers in reply. She tells me the time, the weather and plays my music. I love lying in bed and watching a streaming service and can adjust the volume or stop it playing with a voice command and not having to remember where my phone or remote is. Perfect bedroom alarm clock. Great that the camera has a shutter that I can keep closed but open when I video call.

If you are someone that is always doing more than one thing at once you will truly appreciate an echo show.
From simply asking a question that will actually be heard and answered when you first ask it, to playing music, news or something else on command or scheduled ( routine ) or simply showing you a recipe while you are putting groceries away with one hand and gathering the ingredients with the other.
