We watched the latest version of Emma and we are still amused by Bill Nighy's performance as Mr Woodhouse. He is perfect, adding enough humour and light relief without overdoing the role and overshadowing the other characters. Gaby is in love with Mr Knightly. Mr Elton reminded me of a foolish version of Euria Heap. Slimy without the sinister. Emma takes you from dislike to feeling sorry for her, to liking her and being pleased for her. We thoroughly recommend it. A few key elements were missing suggesting it could have been half an hour longer. The music was enjoyable to, featuring Maddy Prior and others, but perhaps an unnecessary distraction.

I really love this adaptation of Emma, though I wasn't really expecting to. It's a freer adaptation than most - Mr Knightley, for example, is far less reserved than we're used to - but it's true to the heart of Austen's story, and some of the Particular Moments are as well done here as in any other. I really loved the rural feel to it, the country traditions and the folk music. The novel is very much set in a rural village, and this adaptation made the most of that. The other thing I really loved was the way the characters' physicality was made real - while the characters are all still suitably innocent (inn-OH-cent?) and you could watch this with peeps of any age, we are reminded that the prim-and-proper clothes cover real flesh-and-blood people. Austen knew that, of course, but this film makes other costume dramas seem to keep the focus too tightly on the surface. 5 very happy stars!

This new production shows us young people in roles which show off their own wit and humour. Emma's vanity and thoughtlessness have never been show so vividly on the screen. It is a fast-paced, colourful and brilliantly acted race through the Regency period.

A fabulous adaptation of the novel b y Jane Austen and one of the more successful ones! Wonderfully drawn characters and excellent storytelling! All leads to having a superb time viewing this film.

Rather heavy-handed treatment of this deliciously lighthearted story. The sound technician also has not done a proper sound check on the heroine's microphone. Her lines were muffled and often totally indecipherable. Background loud singing in strange places. Disappointing.

Enjoyed this latest version of Emma. Worth a look! Miss Woodhouse (Anya Taylor-Joy) gave a wonderful performance in the romantic outcome of a glittering satire of social class. Stunning scenery & homes. Also liked the touch of humour.

Disappointing and slow

Lavish costumes, beautiful locations but sadly lacking in every other area. Not my favourite adaptation by a very long way. It did rather drag from one scene to the next. The 'comedic' touches were often not that at all but were, instead, just hammed up and over cooked to boot, reducing elements of the film to general silliness and slapstick. I think the director got Mr Elton confused with Mr Bean and it didn't work. The idiotic scene with the nosebleed was utterly pointless. The lead roles lacked chemistry and energy, when compared particularly to the earlier version starring Gwyneth Paltrow, Jeremy North, Alastair Cumming and Toni Collette. Emma is not necessarily a very likeable character during much of the book but even so, one has a sort of sympathy for her and amusement at her inappropriateness - I guess women of that era had to find something to do to alleviate the sheer tedium and rigidity of their lives - but I struggled to find one redeeming feature about the Emma portrayed in this latest film version. The film was saved only by Bill Nighy, playing the role of Mr Woodhouse and he gave me all of the very, very small handful of laughs in the film. Very disappointing and the two stars are for the costumes and the locations.

Carry on Emma
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 22 June 2020Verified Purchase
This production takes the subtle humour of the novel and pushes it front and centre to the point where the characters seem like caricatures of those created by Austen. A couple of the visual elements also grated badly with me, a naked Mr Knightly being dressed by his servant and Emma hiking up her dress to warm her derriere in front of the fire being two examples.....Ooo Errr Emma. I also felt that the age difference between Emma and Mr. Knightly was negligible which removed a large part of the central tension of the book. It did look sumptuous though.

Absolute drivel

Should have a health warning. Watching this made me feel physically sick - to see that anyone with a fancy name can be let loose on a classic and then destroy it. Actor selection was outlandish, acting was cr*p. Editing was disjointed. One star is for film definition and some costumes. That's it. Wish I'd waited until it was on Prime.

Superficially lovely but ultimately empty.

This most recent adaptation of an Austin classic left me cold. Its beautifully shot and lit. The locations and costumes are stunning. It lacked soul. Bill Nighy seemed to be playing Bill Nighy. Emma's "meddling" in the lives of those surrounding her seemed to be done less because she felt she was helping them and was successful in so doing and more because she was bored, enjoyed toying with people like a child pulling the legs off a beetle and, quite simply, because her position meant she 'could'. There was no real contrition on her part when things went badly, just mild surprise. Vapid sums it up. No doubt the film will lauded. In my opinion there are far better adaptations available

Beautiful production, but there’s no kindness in this Emma.
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 14 May 2021Verified Purchase
This is Emma without the kindness or goodness of heart and an awful lot of pouting. The production is very visually pretty, with amazing backgrounds & really different but beautiful costumes, but a lot of the affection between the relationships has been transformed into petty infighting or at best cordial politeness. Emma and her father, Isabella and Mr. John Knightley, her family’s relationship with the Bates’ etc. Even the portrayal of Jane Fairfax is a disappointment. She doesn’t come across as an elegant, reserved lady at all, but instead rather downtrodden. Emma herself is in no way resilient, cheerful & vivacious with a big heart. Instead they’ve played up her coldness, her superiority, and she is almost unlikable as a result. I do think the visuals are great but the movie fails on the greatest challenge of how to translate and show Emma’s true heart beneath the snobbery. They sort of attempt it at the end, but book Emma’s primary motivation is nearly always for the comfort of her friends and family, and this Emma is all about self-interested pleasure and her own personal pain. Strangely, this entire approach makes the comedy a lot less funny than it should be. It’s a shame, because I really wanted to like the film. On the plus side, there is chemistry between the two leads, which is unusual for an Emma production.
