"I'm the bad guy?"
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 7 September 2019Verified Purchase
Michael Douglas gives one of the finest performances of his career as the troubled Bill Foster, an everyday man who - estranged from both wife and daughter, and no longer “economically viable” - begins to unravel on one steaming hot day in Los Angeles, as he questions his place in a world that no longer needs him. On his trail is Detective Prendergast - brilliantly played by Robert Duvall - who is working his final day before early retirement. Largely disliked and dismissed by his own colleagues because of his desk job status - a decision made to appease his neurotic wife – he also comes to question his own place in the world... At the time of its release, this film caused some controversy; with many complaining that the characters that provoked Foster's violent responses were merely stereotypes, and harmful ones at that; while director Joel Schumacher was accused of making a film that was all surface sheen and lacking in depth. While I would acknowledge that there is some truth to those assertions, I do believe that as the years go by, with more and more diversity quotas being imposed, and ever greater discrimination and hostility shown towards the demographic group that both Douglas and Duvall's characters represent, this film will only become ever more relevant...

Riveting movie

I don't usually watch violent movies but this one is different in that it has an intelligent view on what is wrong with some aspects of society, and the frustration that can result in mental illness and violence ,the character Bill just wanted to see his divorced wife and kid on her birthday on foot after having to abandon his car due to a traffic jam but came across some unsavory, some just plain stupid and obstructive individuals (we all meet them from time to time) on his journey home with whom he was forced to deal with.
Even with the violence and stupidity which was caused by others he had no animosity with innocent people so he wasn't an evil man just killing or causing mayhem for the sake of some misguided cause like we see these days even though he had been sent over the edge, he wasn't all bad.
The movie is getting on in years but comes across as forever young.Michael Douglas plays the role brilliantly and should have got an Oscar but didnt,I shall never understand why.
One of my favorite movies that comes to end all too quickly.

No hero in this movie! Great film.

Original cut, no extras, and certainly not high definition - video quality showing it's age to be honest ...but doesn't get in the way of a great plot!
Should we empathize with Michael Douglas' character? Enjoy the destruction? Maybe a little, but he's too far gone. Lost in cynicism, and "undeserved" failure, both of which he is half to blame for.
We get Robert Duvall's detective as a contrast. And other "discarded" people, like the "not economically viable" guy. They provide some poignant moments.
Joel Schumacher also manages to fit in some dark humor. And he never leaves a scene running too long. It's all very sharp screenplay, still fresh. Look out for small visual hints like American flags falling to the floor in one early scene. Good film making.
Worth a watch.

Great fun. Don't we all wish we could go off the deep end like this? No? Just me? Oh well.

Bittersweet black comedy

Everybody has had the day from hell at some time and this film is the epitome of that.
Michael Douglas plays a white collar worker who finds himself at the end of his tether, where literally nothing is running smoothly in his day and everyone and everything is winding him up big time.
As painfully poignant as it is funny, you can't help but feel for the guy as he desperately tries to negotiate his way through the ever increasing frustrations of everyday urban existence, when all he wants to do is get home and see his daughter.
I saw this back in the day, but boy oh boy does it warrant repeat viewings.
