4.0 out of 5 starsWorth the read

This book is a great book to read on those rainy days where you really can’t get inspired to do anything else.. I loved Sally Hepworth’s easy style, her reference to Australian places and weather, and her ability to bring the characters to life. The only thing I found a bit hard was trying to remember each character as the focus on each one changed regularly in the book and it was hard to keep up at times. Overall, I really enjoyed it.

2.0 out of 5 starsSome strange phrases

I just couldn’t get past the use of “illegitimate”. This outdated term has not been used for years. So I had a hard time accepting 30 something year old women would be thinking or fearful of having a so called “illegitimate “ child. Just discredited an already soft story. Otherwise I might of seen this as a “no brainer” Moriarty kind of read: easy and ok

Easy going read and one that entertains while on holidays. Slow to start but it then gets better, not many twisters but a pleasant reading.

5.0 out of 5 stars Addictive

I found this book to be so addictive, I almost felt like a voyeur while reading this.
Centred around three young families in a typical suburban street of Pleasant Court, Bayside, Melbourne, each family has secrets and insecurities. They all know each other, without being great friends and a wave is all it takes to be good neighbours. But who is this new neighbour Isabelle, a single woman who isn’t quite what she seems.
This was so easy to read but I must admit that I took pen to paper at first just to get the characters/families straight in my head. Covering a multitude of subjects like postpartum depression, infidelity and mental illness it was just like a portrait of everyday life with a twist, which drew me in from the very first chapter and with many moments of ‘just one more chapter’.
This was a book I devoured in a few hours and loved and I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend it at all.
Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for a copy to read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great character driven novel
Reviewed in Australia on 16 May 2018
Sally Hepworth writes about motherhood, families and friends. She has a knack for exploring relationships and the "everyday" in an interesting way.
In this novel, she focuses on a street in an affluent suburb in Melbourne and a few families who are neighbours. It is a suburb full of families which is why they are surprised when a single woman, Isabelle moves in. It becomes apparent quite quickly to the reader that not all is as it seems with Isabelle and that she is there to uncover a secret.

The first half of this book has a Big Little Lies feel to it, but by about half way it has left those comparisons behind and I was hooked and couldn't stop reading. As we get towards the latter half it feels more like a Hepworth book again as we explore relationships and motivations for decisions. She is a truly talented character writer and I look forward to reading her future books!

If you haven't read any of her work before, I recommend starting with The Things We Keep. Although I have enjoyed all of her books, I still think that is my favourite :)

Thanks to the publisher and NetGalley for providing me with an advanced reader copy in exchange for an honest review.

5.0 out of 5 stars Intriguing

What an amazing story! It twists and turns and just when you think you've pinned it down, it twists again.
Following the stories of various suburban women and their families, the author weaves an intriguing tale that gripped me from the first page. I found the characters, and their situations, to be authentic and very relatable. The author demonstrated that there is good and bad in everyone and often the lives that seem to be the most perfect are anything but. There were several late nights as I found it difficult to put the book down.
This is the first book of Sally Hepworth's that I have read but I definitely want to read more of her work. A huge thank you must go to Beauty & Lace Book Club and Pan McMillan for choosing me to read and honestly review this book.
