5.0 out of 5 starsTotally biased review because I enjoy their writing so much I devoured this in a state of ridiculous happiness!
Reviewed in Australia on 26 November 2021
I’m not even going to PRETEND to be unbiased here because I bloody love @ilona_andrews books and I absolutely devoured this next installment in the Kinsmen universe!

⚔️Synopsis (Goodreads):
An uneasy alliance between warring families gets heated in this otherworldly novella from bestselling author Ilona Andrews.

At first glance, the planet Rada seems like a lush paradise. But the ruling families, all boasting genetically enhanced abilities, are in constant competition for power—and none more so than the Adlers and the Baenas. For generations, the powerful families have pushed and pulled each other in a dance for dominance.

Until a catastrophic betrayal from within changes everything.

Now, deadly, disciplined, and solitary leaders Ramona Adler and Matias Baena must put aside their enmity and work together in secret to prevent sinister forces from exploiting universe-altering technology.
⚔️

Enemies to friends/lovers? Deadly and determined and not apologetic for it? Suave and old school honourable about things that are Just Not Done? Fancy tech and special abilities?

COME AT ME 😍😍😍

As with all the other books in this universe the relationships and interactions between the two MCs was mature, funny and the burn between the two was just *chef’s kiss* perfect. I loved their banter so much, especially when it’s them against enemies. It’s an indelible part of all of IA’s books and it’s brilliant.

One thing though: while it isn’t strictly necessary to read the first two books to understand this (and it’d still be enjoyable!) I highly recommend it so you fully understand what Kinsmen society and world is like.

5.0 out of 5 stars to scream or to sigh?

Though it wasn’t a long book it was thoroughly satisfying. The world building was so excellent that this book would be a great intro to the wondrous world of Ilona Andrews in general and the kinsmen universe in particular. I’m a totally biased and card carrying member of the BDH, but that just means that my expectations were ridiculously high. I’ve just finished my first read, I’m utterly enamored with the couple and I can’t decide whether to scream or to sigh.

Actually, I didn’t think that Ilona Andrews would ever return to the „Kinsmen“ universe, but they did and it was awesome. You needn’t have read the other two books, but since they’re really good, I definitely would (they aren’t connected plot-wise, so you can start here).
So Ramona Adler and Matias Baena are the heads of their respective kinsmen families that hate each other fiercely (the why of it is explained in due course). But because of things (the coolest premises, but not to be spoiled here), Ramona and Matias need to work together and prevent a group of common enemies from destroying both their families’ businesses.
Oh what an awesome world! The society, the science, the politics… everything fits the overall picture flawlessly. The world is not only a great background for the story, but plays a huge part of the awesomeness of the „Kinsmen“ universe. And I loved both Ramona and Matias. They each have their POVs and both are great. The two characters feel very real, their respective backstories explain their actions well and I whooped with joy, when they started their deadly showdown. I read the book in one setting and couldn’t lay it back down. Perfect.

Buon divertimento.

A great little story. A kindness and gentleness in Matias so often missing from romance heroes, it was a refreshing change of pace. And thank Gaia for American authors who have figured out that prescience measurements make no sense in outer space!
I can't wait for this universe to expand...

Another great addition to the Kinsmen universe by Ilona Andrews.
