5.0 out of 5 starsTotally biased review because I enjoy their writing so much I devoured this in a state of ridiculous happiness!
Reviewed in Australia on 26 November 2021
I’m not even going to PRETEND to be unbiased here because I bloody love @ilona_andrews books and I absolutely devoured this next installment in the Kinsmen universe!

⚔️Synopsis (Goodreads):
An uneasy alliance between warring families gets heated in this otherworldly novella from bestselling author Ilona Andrews.

At first glance, the planet Rada seems like a lush paradise. But the ruling families, all boasting genetically enhanced abilities, are in constant competition for power—and none more so than the Adlers and the Baenas. For generations, the powerful families have pushed and pulled each other in a dance for dominance.

Until a catastrophic betrayal from within changes everything.

Now, deadly, disciplined, and solitary leaders Ramona Adler and Matias Baena must put aside their enmity and work together in secret to prevent sinister forces from exploiting universe-altering technology.
⚔️

Enemies to friends/lovers? Deadly and determined and not apologetic for it? Suave and old school honourable about things that are Just Not Done? Fancy tech and special abilities?

COME AT ME 😍😍😍

As with all the other books in this universe the relationships and interactions between the two MCs was mature, funny and the burn between the two was just *chef’s kiss* perfect. I loved their banter so much, especially when it’s them against enemies. It’s an indelible part of all of IA’s books and it’s brilliant.

One thing though: while it isn’t strictly necessary to read the first two books to understand this (and it’d still be enjoyable!) I highly recommend it so you fully understand what Kinsmen society and world is like.

Ilona Andrews bring realism to their stories with detailed backgrounds of the characters; amazing descriptions of surroundings, buildings and other players.
I love how they can firevup your imagination and see their worlds.

Yet another great love story from the legends themselves. Always the perfect amount of tension, world building, character development and passion, but wrapped in an interesting story. Thank you guys! You’re amazing as always.

Another good read from this author. I enjoyed the world building, the characters, the storyline, and even the romance was cute, especially considering that the book wasn’t that long. A short novel maybe? But still a goodie.

1.0 out of 5 stars Wish I Hadn't Purchased.

I was really looking forward to this, the blurb mafe it sounds ace so I pre-ordered, but have found myself more than a little disappointed.

Had to force myself to carry on reading. The world building didn't weave a intricate web that absorbed me.

The main characters didn't ensnare by attention nor did I feel chemistry between them sizzle off the page.

The writing felt a bit stiff.

Not going I my re-read pile. A small amount of skim reading took place.

While Ilona Andrews’ books are now permanently on my must read list, this steps it up a level. Though short (at 9 chapters with an epilogue) the book manages to pack a lot of emotion and action into its pages. If you’re looking for a trope description, this would fall into the enemies to lovers category. But to leave it at that would be to understate the wonderful world building and character formation that turns it into a book that can be read multiple times with new discoveries and familiar joys in each reading. I don’t want to say more because I lack the skill to do it justice, but would absolutely recommend this to anyone looking for a solid story that will grab you from the start and take you for a ride. I finished it in one sitting as it was unputdownable.

Correction: The authors have said that the trope is fated soulmates.

5.0 out of 5 stars to scream or to sigh?

Though it wasn’t a long book it was thoroughly satisfying. The world building was so excellent that this book would be a great intro to the wondrous world of Ilona Andrews in general and the kinsmen universe in particular. I’m a totally biased and card carrying member of the BDH, but that just means that my expectations were ridiculously high. I’ve just finished my first read, I’m utterly enamored with the couple and I can’t decide whether to scream or to sigh.

An excellent addition to the series. The world building and details packed into a short novel is phenomenal (as always). Humour with action, family drama, and a happy ending. What more could you ask for?
