This a classic sample of British TV Drama from the 80's. It is made well, with great direction, wonderful photography and a first class script. Unlike many productions made these days, The Fear used the budget it got on screen, which shows. It is powerful and dramatic with many facets and charms that it really should be a must see for anyone that has an interest in great tv / likes classic tv or just wants a good drama to entertain themselves for a dark damp weekend.
Great performances from some of the cast include Iain Glen and Jesse Birdsall, wonderful interaction and chemistry that take the viewer on the journey that is the lives of low level Londan gang and gangster culture, It is a great watch, I'm remembering when I was allowed to stay up late to watch it when it was on TV, it was so fresh and powerful at the time. Of course, things have changed over the years, not least the amount of violence shown and accepted on TV, yet The Fear still has the power to grip the viewer and force them to the edge of the their seat!

A stylish crime drama very much of it time and place.Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 9 April 2013
This 80s underworld drama has the benefit of actually being made in the 80s. This means that the sense of time and place is spot on.The title suggests menace that is effectively put across by Carl (Glen) as an upwardly ambitious protection racketeer. There is a very complex interaction between the characters, the taut relationship between Carl and his wife (Susannah Harker) as well as the strain place on those around him as his endeavors create new dangers. Unlike more recent crime dramas there is a strong emphasis on manipulation rather than outright violence, what violence there is, is cleverly hinted at by implication. As with all stories of aggressive ambition there is fleeting triumph, followed by great conflict, and tragedy. Long lost and forgotten this is a must see for anyone interested in vintage television drama.

Leave it as the good memory in your head.Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 20 January 2019
Iain Glen is brilliant in this but I did find it hard going in the end. wished I`d` left it as the little gem I remembered it for all those years ago.

The Fear is very good and gritty.Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 20 September 2017
The Fear is a very good TV series and Jerome Flynn is a good actor. He also starred in the hit ITV drama series Soldier Soldier alongside actor Robson Green with whom he sang.

A good gangster dramaReviewed in the United Kingdom on 1 May 2010
The Fear is a good gangster drama from the 80s. I did find it just a little bit slow going to start with, but it started to get better towards around the second or third episode. I still recommend this programme to anyone who likes gangster dramas, whether they are excellent or just very good.
