4.0 out of 5 starsGood device, but lacks HDMI Master Audio output. ATMOS is DD+ lossy only. Improving with updates.
Reviewed in Australia on 19 October 2021
Dolby Vision and 4k HLG UHD output is good.
Interface is somewhat overcrowded with advertising and limited app access - it could be easier to use and promotes media options for many services, not necessarily those you subscribe to - paid advertising of a sort.
No KAYO app for Australian users in the Amazon App store, however the inbuilt browser does allow you to login, save a shorcut to the site, and stream through the browser interface in HD very well.
AX wireless is ok, and is improving with every firmware update. Initially it tended not to share 5GHz band very well with capable wireless access points and AC devices sharing the same band - AC devices that usually operate flawlessly in concert with other 5GHz AX devices tend to lose connectivity - perhaps from incorrect RADAR detection from the Fire TV 4k max AX output. Does not seem to play fairly with other AX devices as well as it should, but again this is improving over time .
Plex TV is good, Netflix dolby Vision enabled and Dolby Digital + level Dolby Atmos also works in Netflix if you have a HDCP 2.0 compliant set of devices, but lack of TrueHD audio output means TrueHD Dolby Master ATMOS ot DTS-HD DTS-X tracks in plex are transcoded to non atmos AC3 audio - Atmos is removed from the stream in the process for plex, so this is a real miss and deal breaker for me. Other HD streaming services such as Disney+. Stan, Netflix, AppleTV and Prime can stream low level DD+ Dolby Atmos audio natively.
There is now a USB Hub with Gigabit Ethernet Support sold on amazon with passthrough power, so you can add this an avoid wifi issues. It also support OTG USB drives for storage expansion and media access.

If you really want Lossless Master HD audio and high fidelity high channel Atmos support then you are much better of with a modern NVIDIA Sheild that appropriately supports these audio modes with better external connectivity and gigabit ethernet for high bandwidth media consumption and high definition audio modes.
Performance is very quick and snappy., the interface is rock solid and the voice recognition is more accurate than any other system I have used - my voice is difficult to correctly recognise typically.
Remote has improved since first received with subsequent updates and is very reliable.
The lack of UHD matching Audio capability is a real miss, and I assume results simply from not paying the correct licensing fees to support them - the internal hardware of the device is definitely capable of doing so. Maybe a future software upgrade will sort this. Finger crossed.

1.0 out of 5 starsRemote stopped working. Replaced the battery then even not working.
Reviewed in Australia on 14 October 2021
I got the replacement remote . It worked for 2 days and again stopped working. I believe battery last for 2 days and then drained out. Amazon should consider IR For remote connectivity rather than wifi.

5.0 out of 5 stars Compatible with HotSpot!
Reviewed in Australia on 8 October 2021
Remote included: Device onlyVerified Purchase
Originally I purchased Google Chrome but after finding out I couldn’t use it with my HotSpot unless I also have my laptop plugged in to use, I immediately returned it and bought this instead.
The Start Up took a little while with all the updates and waiting and loading but once it was ready, it took like 1 minute to set up.
There are a phenomenal amount of apps to choose from, all are simple to login too.
I did have one small hiccup, and that was getting the volume control to work.
It took 6 attempts to get it working BUT IT DID END UP WORKING!
I have tried to get Alexa to work a few times and it hasn’t yet, maybe I need to try it a few more different ways but tbh it isn’t essential to use the device to begin with so I’m not really fussed on whether or not it works.
I haven’t had any trouble with loading, lagging, crashing or anything else!
Besides the minor remote issue with the volume that took a few attempts to correct, it was smooth as heck to set up and start using!
I’m going to enjoy this.

3.0 out of 5 stars Some limitations and Bluetooth not reliable
Reviewed in Australia on 15 November 2021
Remote included: Device onlyVerified Purchase
The Fire Stick Max is working well with some restrictions.

It has a tendency to forget Bluetooth keyboards every week or so and they need to be reconnected manually. I find it much easier to search and control the device with a keyboard than with the included remote.

Alexa seems to search mainly in Amazons Prime Video but not in some other streaming services. That is where a keyboard would come in handy.

The remote is very cheaply made and opening the battery compartment might break it.

The audio setup is limited and the volume can only be controlled via IR on the TV or Receiver. It does not have an option to change the volume in the Fire Stick.

4.0 out of 5 stars AV1 Decoding
Reviewed in Australia on 5 November 2021
Remote included: Device onlyVerified Purchase
I only bought it because it decodes AV1 videos on YouTube. 4K videos always buffered on Chromecast, this Fire TV stick plays them without missing a beat. Only two gripes I have are: 1) When the Fire TV goes into sleep mode, the TV stays on, while the Chromecast shut the TV down. 2) Automatically connects to WI-FI networks you can't delete/forget.

The Drop Bear.
4.0 out of 5 stars Worth it if your TV doesn't have a Disney+ app available.
Reviewed in Australia on 19 November 2021
Remote included: Device onlyVerified Purchase
Bought in Oct '21. If your TV doesn't have a Disney+ app available, this is a *great* way to get around that - better than using a laptop or some other computer. The volume control doesn't work with our '21 model Hisense 4K TV, but I can live with it. I have never bothered with the gimmick that is voice recognition: navigating menus is fine enough. The remote is super small and frankly, cheap + flimsy. I like the ability to download apps, and it's nice that it has an app to view Twitch (even if interacting with chat is painful, it's fine if you just want something different on in the background). A big bummer is that it needs its own power (and the power form the TV's USB ports won't work), but you'd need to power a laptop etc anyway. Occasionally, the remote won't respond for a couple of seconds, so the device can feel unresponsive. Overall however, worth a buy - especially if you can get a discount.

5.0 out of 5 stars Absolutely Awesome
Reviewed in Australia on 8 October 2021

The best device ever. It was so incredibly easy to setup. The user interface is awesome and friendly. The picture quality is also awesome, and it comes with the most comfortable and responsive remote control. It arrived the day after I ordered it. I'd give it 10 stars but I'm only allowed 5. My family and I are so impressed, I ordered another 2 units.

4.0 out of 5 stars All round decent device
Reviewed in Australia on 8 October 2021

Found this to be a good streaming device compared to those in a similar price range. Lag only happens occasionally while searching for something to watch. Just the GUI is somewhat cluttered. The remote is nice though. Works well and doesn't feel cheap. I would recommend compared to others as an alternative.

1.0 out of 5 stars Not Australia Friendly
Reviewed in Australia on 19 December 2021
Remote included: Device onlyVerified Purchase
This product (despite being advertised to the contrary) cannot stream Australian Free-to-Air channels (SBS on demand, 7+, 9Now etc.) It also won't cast most streaming sites either ("Only available for specific sites.")

If you're thinking of getting this product for an older friend/relative I highly recommend against it. A large amount of functionality must be side loaded into the OS, including the ability to move the cursor around in certain apps.

Terrible.

4.0 out of 5 stars Huge improvement - still needs Kayo though!

Upgraded from a Fire TV Lite to Max and the speed difference is huge. There is no more interface lag. App selection is good other than there still not being a Kayo app.
