  • [Basic equipment] Our firesteel is the basic equipment for camping, survival, jungle exploration or hiking. You can use this flint and steel to start a fire multiple times. The flint rod will not suffer corrosion like ordinary lighters. It is an ideal life-saving equipment for lighting campfires, barbecues, signal fires and emergency situations.
  • [Easy to use] Before using ferro rod fire starter rod for the first time, please scrape off the black protective layer on the magnesium rod. You can use it to catch fire only when the rod is silver gray. Slowly scrape the flint with a metal blade to produce some debris in a small pile of hay, leaves or paper, and quickly scratch the magnesium bar to produce sparks to ignite the magnesium debris. When the flame is generated, a thin wooden stick is added to form a flame.
  • [Magnesium rod length] camping fire starter length:4 inches (10 cm). Diameter: 3/8 inch (10 mm). The size is suitable and easy to carry.
  • [High quality] Our magnesium rods are made of durable magnesium alloy. It can also work in humid, rainy, cold, high altitude areas with thin air and wind. Do not use inferior knives as the forward, otherwise it will not produce enough sparks due to insufficient blade hardness
  • [Applicable scenarios] flint and steel kit is widely used in camping, hiking, expedition, survival and emergency situations. It can be carried with you. It is the best choice for adventurers, explorers, and wild survivors. It can be used as a gift for your friends and family.

Instructions for use:

1. First scrape off the protective paint on the surface of the magnesium rod, and then find some combustibles (such as hay, paper, etc.), and scrape some magnesium chips on the combustibles.

2. Aim the magnesium rod at the scraped pile of magnesium chips, and then scrape the magnesium rod with a scraper. The falling sparks will quickly ignite the magnesium chips.

3. After igniting the magnesium chips, add some hay to make the fire burn more vigorously.

Note: Not suitable for children under 12 years old. Use only outdoors, in a controlled environment. Do not leave it unattended.

2.0 out of 5 stars Emphasis On Commando Styling Rather Than Practical Use
Reviewed in the United States on 9 November 2021
See photos – push apart multi-piece whistle to release 2 pieces (40 in. long each) of 7-strand 550 paracord. – and throw all that junk away as being pretty much useless. Get some dayglow orange 550 cord and tie ferro rod and striker together (forget the tacti-cool braiding – you want kinked line - why?). Main objective is to not lose anything, and make it as easy as possible to find if dropped in the woods! The ferro rod is a good workable size that comes with pre-drilled hole. Provided striker will work, but seriously, who needs a combo bottle opener/hex wrench/map scale ruler on a striker tool? In truth, you’d be better off buying a straight handle carbide bit garden tool sharpener that’s just about as long as this ferro rod, tying them together and you’re set to produce some seriously hot showers of sparks (add a useable life-vest style emergency whistle to the mix if you’re so inclined). Moving on, the carry bag is interesting – it’s a shiny, tightly woven (internal side is black) fabric with an opposing pull drawstring closure that’s overly heavy –it would be more at home in a jewelry drawer protecting a really expensive watch or bracelet. The whole point of a ferro-rod is that water has no effect on it. The stylish carry bag seems to add to item expense rather than functional utility. No instructions other than on the sleek outer packaging. You are directed to scrape the rod to obtain “magnesium chips” which are added to other combustibles to start making your fire. Sorry, but totally wrong. Most ferrocerium rods actually have only a minute amount of magnesium – their major alloy components are iron, cerium, (and other components - sometimes called mischmetal) that create sparks when rapidly scraped by the squared edge of a steel object - your knife or striker tool - (oxidation + rapid friction = tiny flaming sparks of burning metal fragments being vigorously cast off from the ferro rod). As shown in photo, to actually use this tool, you must first scrape away some of the protective black coating that keeps the ferro rod from oxidizing/corroding/rusting away into useless scrap (leave as much coating on as you can for as long as you can). Magnesium bars to create burn shavings are something entirely different than a ferro rod. This isn’t the best ferro rod I’ve ever tried, but it’s certainly large enough for practical use and throws an acceptable level of burning metal. By the way, don’t use the circular cut-out on the provided striker to create sparks, you’ll have much better results using a squared edge (a carbide garden tool sharpener does even better, and serves double duty of being used to sharpen your edged tools).
In short, I believe much of the expense of this kit is misdirected into elements that don’t have great practical value to someone who actually practices bushcraft survival skills. I’d suggest looking for less expensive/more functional alternatives.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great camping or survival tool

If you've never used a magnesium fire starter before, you will be surprised how easy and useful they are. This is a nice kit, complete with a length of braided paracord and a carry pouch. I got the longer 6" rod, which I recommend. It's easier to handle and use than the shorter one, and since the magnesium is used up over time, it will last longer.

It's surprising how many people don't read the instructions and realize there is a protective paint coating on the rod when new, and that has to be scraped off before use. So pay attention, and don't give up because the painted rod won't spark.

There are lots of how-to videos on the use of these fire starters, so if you don't know how to use them, check them out. I tested mine with a small ball of dryer lint (don't laugh, it's a perfect tinder), and I had fire on the second strike. And depending on the tinder you have, it's not necessary to scrape as much "starter" magnesium off as some say. I used only a small sprinkling on my tinder. Harder-to-light tinder will require more.

Tips -
- Use good tinder (cotton balls, dryer lint, crumbled dry leaves, gauze, dry moss, etc.).
- Have small pieces of dry fuel ready to add to the fire, then slowly add larger and larger pieces as the fire grows.
- Strike the rod in long strokes, not little strikes like you might do with a piece of flint.
- Keep the rod close to your tinder so the sparks don't scatter.
- Teach your kids how to use this starter. You never know when it might come in handy.
