Inspired by one of Australia’s most highly rated sports podcast series, Football Belongs: Eight Matches That Explain Australia explores the intersection between sport and nation building through the lens of football.
Football Belongs argues that football is a case study for modern Australia and - as much as any Australian cultural pursuit - has played a fundamental role in shaping our nation. With eight football matches serving as a backdrop, the book explores the paradox of football’s enduring influence in areas such as multiculturalism, gender equality and inspiring early Indigenous activists with its consignment to the shadows of “mainstream” Australian life.
Some matches are allegories for the struggles faced by members of the Australian community, some matches hold up a mirror to who we are as Australians whilst some demonstrate football’s unwitting power to shape modern Australia.
"Football Belongs speaks to the heart of this by shining a light on where we come from. John Didulica has given us all the opportunity to no longer know our place but rather to take the lead for where we go from here", says Celtic Head Coach and former Socceroos Coach, Ange Postecoglou in his Foreword.
"John Didulica delivers a compelling and beautifully crafted narrative on the importance of football to our nation", Craig Foster AM

This is an important project that documents the story of soccer in Australia, placing soccer as a central threat running through Australian culture and identity. Given one in two Australians are first or second generation migrants, it's no surprise that soccer has often been a part of the migration experience.
Football Belongs is a fantastic read and enriched my understanding not just of soccer but of our nation. Recommended.
