A Billy Wider film, not a powerful as some of his others, but it does have his skilled direction and is therefore worth watching.
There is a lot genuine footage of a ruined post-war Berlin and the film attempts to show the real situation of that time and place.
Described as a romantic comedy drama there are excellent performances from both Jean Arthur and Marlene Dietrich, but the acting weakness is John Lund. Perhaps an actor with more of a deft comic touch would have made more of the role.
But it's not all comedy - its a kind of sarcastic satire on the squalid realism of the period and towards the end of the film the ghost of Nazism raises its head. Besides Wilder there were 3 other scriptwriters which could have made the story confusing, but it is perfectly coherent, probably because Wilder was in charge.
