I can only assume the twist of his immortality throw the average dumb viewer off, or force them to pay more attention than usual.
The flashbacks to his days centuries ago are a fantastic spice to a good crime show, not sloppy or hurried. Every scene seems like great care was taken to make each one real and detailed. Add the great actors and you have one of the best TV shows I've seen.
They knew it only got 1 season in time to end the show properly, for what it's worth.

Especially with the drivel we normally have to endure on our channels from you.
This is an excellent series from start to finish.... I was absolutely gutted when I heard it was being cancelled
