A good film that along, with a number of other civil war or western films of more recent years,uncovers and throws a different light on aspects and events of the time. The ones dealt with in this film highlight one of the major issues of what the American Civil War was about, the issue of race and the rights of liberty re slavery. Most films of the past have as such seemingly ignored this and dealt only with the actual fight as it occurred between white people but this film, along with others such as Glory, (which is about events involving one the formation of a black regiment of soldiers on the Union side), brings back to fore the issues of the war and the plight of black people of the time. But it also deals with another mostly unknown aspect, the abuse of white people by the armed forces re taking their land or property for use in the war and the resultant resentment and, nearing the war’s end, active resistance over this. Sadly re slavery the issue of emancipation was not in fact solved at the time by the victory of the North, as is shown in this film near the end in the scenes where the black people try to vote in the Presidential election, only to face the continued bigotry of many whites. All round a very good film if you’re interested in the social history and realistically portrayed by all in it.

Free State of Jones is a film of interest about a part of American history that became relevant to the nation, and continued to inspire social movements years later, if not maybe progressive attitudes of today everywhere, towards less educated people and above all towards the idea of race. There is a battlefield start with effective views of uniforms, wounds, and lifestyle conditions, and next rural details of the time and place are visible with the clothing, healthcare, farming methods, animals use, etc. which makes the film rather educational. From the Civil War develops a story of a man and his wish to survive, assisting his fellow friends, and after the end of the war, to live in a state where no man is more equal than another. The downside is a bit of the acting is not very good and the photography of locations and the action is. Free State of Jones may so be of the biopic genre and true story category, but the occasional worser poker face acting transforms a serious history film into 'movie heroes' with very nice filming.

What a surprise of a movie! Powerful in its presentation and rather subtle in its message. It does not push the sadness and injustice of the past in your face, it's more giving an example of how to make hard choices for the right reason and the personal convictions of good. I do not think it is so much about South or North as both didn't help the cause, it is about humanity and respect that is not bound to race.

im right wing and think the civil war in America was about slavery the north had more slaves than the south if I had of lived in America at that time I would have lived in the south and joined the confederate army it was about defending your state nothing to do with slavery

I thought the acting was very good.It Showed how ruthless some of the CSA was at the time.I think if the Winchester rifle had been invented two years earlier the war might have had a different outcome.One of the better civil war films,which showed one side rebel on itself.
