I was born in Kent but spent most of my working life in London and Surrey. I was an apprentice florist to Constance Spry Ltd, a prestigious Mayfair shop that throughout the Sixties and Seventies teemed with both royalty and ‘real’ celebrities. What an eye-opener for a working-class kid from the Garden of England! I swore then, probably whilst I was scrubbing the floor or making the tea, that I would have a shop of my own one day. It took until the early Eighties, but I did it. Sadly the recession wiped us out, and I embarked on a series of weird and wonderful jobs; the last one being a bookshop manager. Surrounded by books all day, getting to order whatever you liked, and being paid for it! Oh bliss!

And now I live in a village in the Lincolnshire Fens with my partner, Jacqueline, and four Springer spaniels and one little rescue, Breton spaniel. I had been writing mysteries for years but never had the time to take it seriously. Now I write full-time, and as my partner is a highly decorated retired police officer; my choice of genre is a no-brainer! I have an on-tap police and judicial consultant, who makes exceedingly good tea!

I have set my crime thrillers here in the misty fens because I sincerely love the remoteness and airy beauty of the marshlands. This area is steeped in superstitions and lends itself so well to murder!

I am lucky enough to be one of the amazing Joffe Books team of authors and am really enjoying being able to spend time doing what I love... writing!

I find Joy Ellis books very hard to put down. She's a writer who clearly defines her characters, the Fenlands and what is going to happen or has happened.
She never loses sight of the Fens, so you are transported to a very different part of England, one that is wide and open and totally captivating.
Once you have read the first book, and yes, it's best to start at the beginning, you won't be able to stop until you are, like the rest of us, begging for the next one.

I found this book, and to a lesser extent the previous one, to be a less than satisfactory read, which felt as though it had been written by a computer, or by a ghost writer copy pasting from earlier books. The language was strange and the phrasing repetitive, the degree of exposition made the whole thing seem amateurish. I had been on a roll, but I won’t be reading any more of these.

Not a book you can put down and return to next day with the complexity of the story. The story begins with unusual deaths and then continues to analyse these by various detectives, a psychologist, a forensic team and computer experts. I did find there was so many characters involved that after a while I had a page full of names to remember and there part played in this story which was a bit off putting. The twisted desire of the serial killer kept everyone on their toes almost taunting them with the occasional paragraph his victims had in their procession. Without telling the story he turns out to be a master manipulator of people with devious intent which he has planned for a long time. The story is very interesting but overloaded with people.

I enjoyed this book very much. Sometimes a little stretch of the imagination for search results to be so easily obtained but still a very good read.....just ignore the parts that sort of make you shake your head. It is just a story after all, and if we don’t have these little pieces of far fetched results, and a team that just “knows” intuitively what each are thinking and can work seamlessly together then there is no story.

Very readable, and I will look forward to more.

Another cracking read from Joy Ellis. The fourth in the Jackman / Evans series, this one runs close to home for Jackman when his sister-in-law disappears and then throws herself into a river in London. This is an engaging read, with enough twists and turns to make it hard to put down. As always, I appreciated the sense of camaraderie Joy Ellis creates between her characters and the 'solving' of a case through team work, rather than the single brilliant mind kind of approach.

This is the second book by Joy Ellis that I read and I thought that I had found a new writer to follow. The plot was good - that of a wronged murderer who was in fact innocent. The new murders sound plausible but at the end part we have a motorcycle chase and the guilty party, despite a broken arm following a crash, somehow just disappears despite being followed by a squad of cars!!! The next page is Epilogue: Two months later. It was if the author had reached the page count and just gave up. REALLY disappointing and frankly a right cop out by Joy Ellis. The First book I read was 'The Lost Boys' and the ending of that was unfinished in many ways - but as this was her 10th plus book, feel that this is simply unacceptable from the readers point of view. I won't be wasting my time with anything more from this author. Disappointing is my overall review.

I said I would never read another book by Joy Ellis, but the plot looked good and there were some favourable reviews so I thought I would give her a second chance. The plot was ok but I don't think the long delay in seeking revenge by the perpetrator was fully explored. None of the characters were especially endearing, and I found that I didn't really care about them.

Once again the dialogue and narrative spoilt the flow for me, it was really off putting having the characters speak in such a stilted way. Perhaps people speak like that in the Fens, I don't know. Phrases such as 'you cannot ', 'I will go', 'you will not', for example, people just don't talk like that! And other terms such as 'Oh Lord' and 'blast' reminded me of Enid Blyton. I was fully expecting a 'grand' and 'champion ' to find its way in followed by the police officers celebrating by drinking lashings of ginger beer!

No more Joy Ellis unless she gets her characters to be more realistic and to talk properly.

This is yeysnother excellent read by Joy Ellis.
The first I've read in the jackman and Evans books, but it won't be the last.
From start to finish it was well paced, and it's one of those stories where you can visualise the characters well without too much individual time spent on them.
The whole team worked really so well together, it was easy not to think they were fictitious, a sign of an excellent writer in my opinion.
I had this read in a couple of nights it was that good, much better than TV.

Cant wait to get into the next one, or go start at the beginning of the series.

Not the worst book I've ever read but not the best either. The grammar was OK, thankfully, but it was not very exciting reading. I did manage to get to the rather unsatisfactory ending.

I did make a note of one error - at location 1782 the name "Pritchard" was mistakenly used instead of "Seaton". Bring your proof reader to task Ms Joy Ellis.

I don't think I'll purchase further books by this author as I've since realised that I was unimpressed with her book "Beware the Past"

I absolutely love the characters and the storyline is really good, different from your usual crime stories.
I have found a new favourite author and will be catching up with other books written by Joy Ellis then wait with bated breath for each one released after that!
