This is a fabulous continuation of the everyday story of psychopathic folk and there’s plenty enough Valyrian steel for people who, like me, want to get in touch with their fifteen-year-old selves again. It’s a difficult season to review without letting slip a spoiler but I’ll have a go. The moment of the whole season that made it for me was when the character who resembles uncannily a present-day politician has a bad hair day and I enjoyed too, who wouldn't, the unrelenting horror of the pitiless battles.
While production values are as through the roof as ever, this season is a bit patchier than some of the earlier ones and the story stutters a little at points but that’s just nit-picking and this season is still worth its five stars from me if anyone is interested. No, I thought not.
If you haven’t seen this yet I envy you for there’s no better way to spend 500 minutes or so up to your elbows in blood, dastardly scheming and skulduggery.

"Hold the door!"

Game of Thrones is over! The hugely disappointing final season of the show has left a bitter taste in the mouth, which is hard to dispel. But where did it all go wrong? After all, the first four seasons were excellent! Season 5 had its ups and downs but it was still - bar Dorne - riveting television. I believe we can trace the seeds of its demise to season 6. This was the first season to be made which did not have George R R Martin's magnificent source material to guide it. So, bar a few stipulations from Martin, writers, Benioff and Wiess, had carte blanche to do as they pleased, and, as a consequence, the writing, plot and character motivations became less real and compelling. The first five seasons were very strong in punishing characters for their mistakes; with Jon Snow's death at the close of season 5 being the ultimate expression of this. Decisions characters made had real consequences. However, in this season certain popular characters start wearing plot armour; such as Arya, who manages to survive a vicious stabbing which would have killed her in an earlier season. The character of Tyrion also suffers, as he seems a little less clever than before. In fact, it is here he begins to make one bad decision after another, until in season 8, he is reduced to an ineffectual fool. Also, it is in season 6 that we are introduced to fast travel, as characters traverse immense distances in no time at all. We are also introduced to Euron Greyjoy, a one note villain without the complexities of his character in 'A Feast For Crows' – where's the eye-patch?
Now, all this sounds like I'm giving a wholly negative review of season 6. Not so. I just wanted to trace the origins of, what I see as, its gradual fall from grace into the unholy mess that was season 8. For the most part, I actually enjoy season 6. It may not be as complex as before, with an ever greater reliance on crowd pleasing spectacle, yet it still provides moments of truly thrilling television. 'The Battle of The Bastards' gives us one of the most realistic fantasy/medieval battles ever; whereas, the conclusion to the episode, 'The Door,' is heart wrenching. It is also beautifully filmed, and generally well played. In short, season 6 of 'Game of Thrones' may not be its best, but it is certainly not its worst.

You just have to love GOT.
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 3 August 2017Verified Purchase
In a way it's fairly pointless writing a review for this as you either love GOT or you don't. If you love it then you will already have bought this and watched it avidly. I watched it with a mixture of fascination, incredulous disbelief and just plain enjoyment. I don't know why I love GOT. It's full of horrible greedy self serving people who are cruel manipulative and power hungry but it's so addictive. I mean why do I love Tyrion? Why do I feel sorry for Jamie. So many characters you should deplore you end up rooting for. I enjoyed this season just as much as the previous five and no doubt I will be preordering season seven.

Season 6 is a feast of cinematic beauty and story telling, some of it would give the best of Hollywood a run for it's money. Emotional, poignant and thrilling, this series never fails to disappoint. In fact in keeps on getting better and better. Not to be missed.

Impressive in all respects
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 26 July 2017Verified Purchase
I watched this entire series in two evenings, on DVD. I almost wish I hadn't, since I feel a profound sense of loss now. Anyhow, this series has maintained a steady sense of drama and suspense, with a generous helping of violence and profanity for good measure. As always, the acting is first rate too, and with excellent screenplay and cinematography also thrown into the mix, it isn't difficult to understand why this show has been so phenomenally popular. As an aside, it is interesting to see how it explores the hidden depths, facets and dimensions to the human psyche, but even just on a shallow, visceral level, this series, and indeed, this season, are seriously, seriously stunning; in pretty much all respects.
