Are you exhausted by your baby's night-time waking or frustrated by your toddler's reluctance to go to bed?
Would you prefer a gentler approach than sleep-training techniques such as controlled crying or pick up/put down?
The first five years of parenting are filled with worries and preoccupations, but, for the vast majority, none of them is as pressing as the lack of sleep.
In this revised and updated edition of her bestselling book, Sarah Ockwell-Smith offers a gentle, effective prescription for addressing the common sleep challenges encountered by parents of newborns to five-year-olds. Treading a carefully balanced line between the needs of sleep-deprived parents and those of the child, Sarah offers reliable, evidence-based advice including:
*How long we can expect our children to sleep at each stage of development.
*Why much of the popular advice on sleep is inaccurate and counterproductive.
*How to approach common issues including frequent waking, night terrors and bedtime refusal.
Sarah's practical suggestions for each developmental stage include how to create a consistent bedtime routine and optimal conditions for sleep, the effect of diet, and how to use comfort objects effectively. This revised includes new chapters providing specific advice on daytime naps (when and how to drop them) and how to take care of your own needs and emotions during the early years of disrupted sleep, because your feelings and health matter too.

This book is the only one I would suggest reading in regards to realistic expectations about baby/toddler sleep as it references actual research and doesn’t make you feel like a failure if you have a little sleep thief like I do. Now that I’m a more experienced parent I would say wholeheartedly please please trust your instincts, not what some “sleep trainer” may tell you about leaving your child to cry. Babies and toddlers are human beings with a strong need to connect with us, you will get through the sleepless nights and you really will sleep again.
My son has actually been diagnosed recently with sleep apnoea (potentially from enlarged adenoids). This book briefly covers this condition. What this book really helped me to do was trust my instincts about keeping him close, responding to him, comforting him and breastfeeding on demand. I also appreciated the advice about bedtime routines and gentle night-weaning (it really is possible to gently nightwean a boob monster!). What I didn’t need to hear from well meaning friends, relatives and even misinformed health professionals was that I had created a sleep problem by responding to and breastfeeding my child on demand.
Despite his sleep apnoea, sleep has actually improved naturally over time just like this book encourages you it will. And I say that as a parent of a child who has had the worst sleep out of everyone I know!

Buy 'The Baby Sleep Guide' by Stephanie Modell instead.

On the plus side it includes evidence based suggestions and talks about the not being any quick fix, which is sensible advice. I
