How are ratings calculated?
To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. Instead, our system considers things like how recent a review is and if the reviewer bought the item on Amazon. It also analyses reviews to verify trustworthiness.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Must For Sonic Youth Fans!
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 10 February 2020

With Sonic Youth being one of my favourite bands this was a must buy for me and I’d urge any fan of the band to buy it also!
Not only does it give great insight to the art and music world of late 70s early 80s New York and beyond, but also into Kim’s life as an artist, musician, fashion designer and mother. It is at times heartwarming and equally as heartbreaking but I cannot recommend it enough as it perfectly encapsulates one of alternative music and cultures most important figures.
A fan

5.0 out of 5 stars Nice bio
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 25 December 2018

Since this is no ghost writer bio you can tell that the ups and downs in the mood are sincere. The chronological trajectory of the book also seems to take the burdennoff Kim to come up with a specific concept beyond that of the memoir and that is such a wise choise since this brings to front the apologetic tone of the writer in many points. Even though i had already read a couple of sonic youth bios before the emphasis in the writing process fron the inside that kind of puts everything in boxes, how thurston wrote, what lee did usw. I really enjoyed the pictures too

5.0 out of 5 stars This was a great book but not really what I expected
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 3 February 2018

This was a great book but not really what I expected. I preferred Viv Albertines book which I feel focused more on the music business. This book was more of a biography which to be honest detailed the breakdown of Kim and Thurstons marriage and clearly a lot of bitterness there! I love Sonic Youth and its great for a fan but as a real rock and roll story I feel it falls down slightly.

4.0 out of 5 stars Honest

I have been reading this book for a while - real life kept getting in the way. It seemed a bit chaotic at first but then I realised that it is more memories than a linear storyline. Like remembering things. I loved how Kim was so candid about her personal life. True artist, wearing her heart on her sleeve. Sharing her feelings through her words. Yes, I am a Sonic Youth fan but to be fair to her, was not expecting too much about the band. Glad I bought this.

4.0 out of 5 stars Autobiography is a dark art
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 18 May 2018

Autobiography is always tricky as there is always a feeling that stuff is being unsaid or held back for fear of giving offence. This is an understandable hurdle and one that is not totally overcome here. Having said that I enjoyed the book it read well and it was interesting hearing about how the band and personal life intersected. It was good to get an insight into Kim’s artwork which I knew little about.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good in parts.

Great insight into her personal life growing up and her life as a musician and yes as a woman in the industry. As a woman scorned.... well that's where things get a little icky for me. It feels like revenge lit. She may look back and regret that. It's a shame she didn't take the high road. Two sides to every story and all.

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent read, really enjoyed it from start to finish

Excellent read, really enjoyed it from start to finish. Talking bout the effects her brother had on her life was refreshingly honest. And also her daughters life as the child of Kim Gordon was also great to read. PS, I wasn't a fan of the band prior to picking it up.
