4.0 out of 5 stars It works

It works in my van, to recharge the Goal Zero 3000X. It has a switch to let you toggle between drawing 5 Amps or 10 Amps from the 12 Volt power port -- so you can avoid drawing too much power and blowing a fuse in your vehicle -- you'll have to find out what the max current for your power port is. In my van, the max current draw from the power ports is 15 Amps, so I'd prefer a switch that went to (say) 12 or 13 Amps, but perfection is hard to come by.

10 Amps time 12 Volts = 120 Watts nominal maximum output. In practice, my 3000X front panel said about 130 Watts. With 8 hours of driving in a day, that amounts to about 1000 Watt-hours = 1/3 of the 3000X battery capacity (less any power draws, such as a refrigerator). So this charger is fairly useful for me on long-distance driving days.

The unit has an LED indicating that it is plugged into a live power source, which is useful to indicate that it is ready for charging when the other end gets plugged into the Goal Zero battery. I did find that it was a little too easy to knock the plug out of the power port or out of the 3000X, so found myself in situations where no charging was happening. In other words, be a little attentive to make sure that the Goal Zero is charging, after you start the engine and before you set off driving. This issue is not a big deal to me.

1.0 out of 5 stars Will Only Charge with Vehicle Running
Reviewed in the United States on 21 October 2020

This item will not charge a Goal Zero Yeti unless it has more than 13 volts. The only way to get that from a vehicles 12 volt system is have the vehicle running so the amp can provided the necessary current. That should be part of the description. Outside of that the item is a 5 star item. Very good quality and construction. The option of 5 amp or 10 amp provides more options for use.

3.0 out of 5 stars Doesn't always charge with a smart alternator in newer vehicles.
Reviewed in the United States on 27 August 2021

My truck (2019 Chevrolet Colorado ZR2) has a smart alternator which varies its voltage output between 11.5 and 14.9 depending on driving conditions. A wide range. It drops below 12 volts to save fuel. When it does, this unit quits charging. So, while you were hoping you'd have a full charge when you pulled into camp for the night, your fridge attached to the Goal Zero has sapped most of the power just running. The truck, in theory, should have been charging the whole time and easily been able to keep up with the fridge with 60 watts continuous on the 5amp setting. Honestly, there needs to be a lower voltage threshold for the unit to not shut off when the alternator voltage drops to save fuel.

Curious if you have a smart alternator? Your voltage will start out strong, around 14.4 and up for a while to recharge the starter battery, then over time, lower the voltage to 13.8 and as you run longer (a few hours of driving or so) will go to 12v and sometimes lower.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent car charger for power stations that have an 8 mm DC input

I use this to charge my Bluetti solar power station when I’m driving and can’t use solar panels. It is high quality.

This should work with any solar power station that has an 8 mm DC input, which is not only the GoalZero Yeti products, but also Jackery, Bluetti, and a few others.

4.0 out of 5 stars Works with Goal Zero Yeti 400
Reviewed in the United States on 24 April 2022

I plugged this into the 12v outlet on my Tesla. It seemed to stop charging unless my car door was open? It was showing about 72 watts charging intake. It never really showed that it was "full " 100% charged until I disconnected from the 12v socket. At any rate it worked. I misplaced my wall socket plug charger and just got this until I find it as its not good for the battery to drop below about a 40% charge.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good current control
Reviewed in the United States on 14 February 2021

Works well. I like the ability to limit the current for added safety. I have had other 12 volt cords that connected to other brand batteries that drew so much current that they melted the plug in the car accessory outlet. Because of that experience, I really like this adapter with it’s current control. It also means that I can control how much current I am drawing. I leave it at the 5 amp setting unless I need to charge faster because I am not driving far and need the additional charge. It also depends on how much I used it the night before as to how fast I need to charge it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Don’t use with higher voltage sources
Reviewed in the United States on 26 March 2022

Rookie mistake here. I bought a DC car adapter and plugged this into to a potable 16-18V solar panel so I could reduce the amps to 5 to charge an electric bike. Within a few seconds after, the unit popped and the top broke off off and flew 10 feet away. I think I should have used a solar panel controller to reduce the volts to 12. I can’t fault the unit of course. At least no harm done to the bike.

5.0 out of 5 stars Works as expected

Works as expected. This has a sizeable 8mm cord incorporated into the unit. I purchased this so I could charge my Goal Zero Unit in my truck bed while on the go. I did not need to purchase the 15 foot extension cord but maybe the 6 footer. Anyway we've been out and tested this and it works fine.

when I hook this up to my 12 volt car battery it charges my Jackey solar generator at a higher wattage. I wished I had gotten one sooner.
