About the Author

Candice Fox is the middle child of a large, eccentric family from Sydney’s western suburbs. The daughter of a parole officer and an enthusiastic foster-carer, Candice spent her childhood listening around corners to tales of violence, madness and evil as her father relayed his work stories to her mother and older brothers.

Excellent thriller about Australia’s quirkiest PIs

This is the third book in the awesome Crimson Lake series by Australian author Candice Fox. I’m so glad they made a TV series out of the first book, now I can picture the characters and the swampy, steamy tropical north. Disgraced former cop, Ted Conkaffey is looking forward to finally getting to spend some time with his daughter, Lilly, while her mum and new boyfriend are in Cairns for a yoga retreat or some such. But nothing goes according to plan.

An 8 year old boy has gone missing from his hotel room in Cairns. The four families were having a break and while the adults had dinner and drinks for two nights the four boys were in one room with plenty of movies, games and junk food to keep them occupied. There were regular hourly checks by one of the parents. What could go wrong? Quite a lot as it turns out. The parents completely underestimated the ingenuity of 4 eight year old rambunctious boys.

The police barely tolerate Ted, who many still think is a paedophile although he has proven his innocence. But they really don’t like his partner, convicted killer Amanda Pharrell - yes she did kill someone but there were extenuating circumstances. They have to be they most unlikely pair of private detectives ever! However, the boy’s mother insists they be involved in the search for her son, Richard Farrow, so they are grudgingly accommodated.

Now Ted has to find someone to babysit 3 year old Lilly during the day. The “morgue lady”, pathologist Val is happy to assist. He just hopes his ex-wife doesn’t find out that little fact!

While Ted and Amanda are working the case Constable Joanna Fisher has a grudge going with Amanda, blaming her for her former partner, Detective Pip Sweeney’s death. This grudge takes some very violent turns but nothing much fazes Amanda. She is one of the awesomest characters in crime fiction today! Crimson Lake attracts the weirdos, people who are running away or running to something or those who just want to keep a very low profile. Amanda and Ted certainly qualify as weirdos. Ted has 7 pet geese that he kept in his bathtub when they were little. Amanda has serious issues but she also has a novel way of approaching problems and is often very insightful.

This high octane thriller races to a rather shocking and unexpected conclusion. I really hope there will a book 4. I was having a little break from arcs and I’m hoping to catch up with a few other of my favourite series soon. Do yourself a favour and read the Crimson Lake series but please start with book 1.

Another engrossing story from Candice Fox. This time, Ted and Amanda are hired by the mother of the eight yo boy who’s disappeared from a locked hotel room just as Ted’s ex is allowing him to have their 3 yo daughter visit him for the first time. Things get weird and dangerous very quickly. The ultra-quirky Amanda creates rapprochement with the unwilling police boss Clark but is bedevilled by psychotic Constable Joanna Fischer. Their mind games include council removal of Amanda’s cats, who are promptly adopted by Amanda’s bikie friends. Tropical Cairns with its dangerous crocs is a character in itself as a hounding media roll out ever more lurid headlines. It might be the work of a teacher with self-confessed paedophile tendencies. No - it’s probably the maintenance guy with the shady past. No wait - it’s someone else altogether who we REALLY didn’t expect and Ted and Amanda nearly get theirs from different people. But, as usual, their observational and deductive skills, not to mention their chutzpah, bravery and a fair bit of luck win out. With help from rookie constable Superfish who is that rare thing, a decent, sane copper. As the story tumbles fast and furiously to its close, Ted faces the reality of what association with him will mean for his daughter and any woman who shows an inclination to hook up with him. The shadows of his undeserved past are long and there’s a sense of ominous fate set to cruel him forever. Fortunately, his ex, who could go to town on him for putting their child in danger, has a new sense of perspective and is surprisingly understanding. A couple of plot twists test credulity somewhat but overall this is another winner from a great writer.

What a scenario! While a group of holidaying parents are enjoying a night of adult company in the dining room, their four boys are watching videos in one of the adjacent motel rooms. Taking her turn to check on the boys single parent Sara finds her son missing. Echoing real disappearances such as that of Madeleine McCann, this is a variation on the 'locked room' mysteries. The boys are in a locked room and do not have a key so how has one of them gone missing? And why do none of the boys admit to being out of the room?
Reprising her enigmatic characters from Crimson Lake and Redemption Point, private investigators Ted Conkaffey and Amanda Pharrell, this is an engrossing tale with plenty of action. Every bit as tense and engrossing as the first two this is a great story. While it mostly stands alone, the background to the two main characters relies heavily on the first two books. Do yourself a favour and read these before treating yourself to this one.

Having read a lot of bad stuff from today's fiction, I found this book quite refreshing. The style is readable and there are no unnecessary and freaky experiments with regard to the narrative, which plague the modern literature. Also, astonishingly, the main character was male, even though the author is a woman, which is very rare indeed nowadays. However, the other lead character, a woman, was simply unbearable, so I am not going to read anything else from the series. I would not rule out reading a different book from the same author, though.

I loved the character Amanda, bizarre though she is, and there were things to like about Ted Conkaffey but I found the situation between him and the police a little unconvincing, particularly the officer called Joanna. I felt that the children, when interviewed, came over as odd. However, there were enough twists and turns in the story to keep me going until the end, hence the four star rating
