The movie significantly relies on the quality of the acting - which does not disappoint. Overall the story is a bit on the average side - with indications of the final twist evident early - but well recommended for a quiet night in.

Prima di ogni altra cosa il film è un duetto fra due interpreti straordinari ( ed Helen Mirren primeggia fra i due). Nella prima mezz'ora ci sembra di assistere ad una rom-com della terza età, ma lo spettatore più sgamato sa che deve aspettarsi il colpo di scena, solo che, a mio parere, i colpi di scena sono un po' troppi e ci troviamo presto sballottati tra generi inaspettati e svolte traumatiche, l'inganno perfetto diventa così un thriller che affonda le radici in uno dei periodi più tragici della storia del novecento. Da vedere in versione originale, con sottotitoli, per poter apprezzare la recitazione di due mostri sacri del cinema e del teatro inglese, ma se volete farvi del male, guardatelo doppiato in italiano.

Was als vermeintlich harmloser Dating-Krimi beginnt, endet in einem perfiden Verwirrspiel um Schuld und Sühne mit einer grandiosen Helen Mirren als unnachgibiger Racheengel. Meisterhaft! Zuletzt habe ich einen derartigen Twist bei Atom Egoyan's "Remember" gesehen - ebenfalls mit dem großartigen Christopher Plummer. Hier lohnt sich die Leih- oder sogar Kaufgebühr. Denn irgendetwas hat man sicher immer wieder übersehen ...

This concoction, at least in film form, is irritating sloppiness. The story seems, judging by the outdoor London scenes, to be taking place in the last couple of years. The main characters (Mirren and McKellen, especially McKellen), would have to be decidedly older to be able to have had the 1944-1948 war experiences on which the film story rests. On top of that, the portrayal of the German family is ludicrous. The subtitled German into English is correct, but what is spoken is an absurd, partly incorrect, performance. Why can't this wealthy businessman and his family master their mother tongue?!! This cluttered piece of filmaking gets two stars, because of Mirren and McLellan. Why, though, did they not venture more guardedly into this muddle of a production?

Vielleicht liegt es daran das ich Zehntausende von Filmen und Fernsehserien gesehen habe und das Schema (auch) solcher Filme sehr gut kenne. Jedenfalls war mir von der ersten Minute des Streifens an klar wie‘s ausgehen wird - und so kam‘s dann auch.
Deshalb wird die Handlung den geübten Zuschauer kaum überraschen.
Wenig überraschend auch das hervorragende Spiel der beiden Altstars Mirren und McKellen, die aus dem Werk denn doch noch eine sehenswerte Angelegenheit machen.
