A dangerously good concoction of Scorsese, Di Niro and the Rolling Stones!
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 28 December 2016Verified Purchase
Director Martin Scorsese has made many wonderful movies, and many will suggest that this 1990 tale of the underworld tops the lot. I think it stands amongst equals, but I would find it hard to argue a better. The 25th anniversary Blu-Ray is the best this classic movie has ever looked. It's a comfortable genre for the director, He excels in it, 'Mean Streets', 'Casino', and 'the Departed' offer further testimony. Adapted for the screen from the memoirs of Henry Hill, Goodfellas sizzles out loud. Ray Liotta is good as the main protagonist, equally good is his co-star Lorraine Bracco. Di Niro was gold dust in this era and continuing a well honed partnership with the director. It is perhaps Joe Pesci's ,'Tommy' that lives most chillingly in the memory. Poor Spider.

Great film, terrible DVD quality
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 13 July 2020Verified Purchase
Obviously the film itself is great. But this is the 1997 DVD release wrapped up in a new sleeve. Poor audio-visual quality, and the DVD needs to be flipped over halfway through. Disappointed.

Arguably Scorsese's finest film
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 20 April 2022Verified Purchase
I bought the bluray of this recently, and having watched it again in the last few weeks, it looked as good as I've ever seen it (except originally at the cinema). Many might argue that Taxi Driver or Raging Bull are the high points of Scorsese's career. And great films they are. Perhaps Goodfellas doesn't quite match them on a purely artistic level, but it gets close AND it's more entertaining in my view. Even watching it for the umpteenth time it still seemed to bowl along at great pace, with memorable scene after memorable scene.
For me only the first 2 Godfather films rate higher in the gangster genre.

Awful Quality.

Avoid. I was concerned when I saw how cheap the packaging and disc looked. On both a DVD player and a PS4 it is terrible quality. The pictures are a 40" TV and you'll see its like watching through a letter box.

Classic gangster film with a stellar cast featuring Joe Pesci, Robert De Niro, Ray Liotta and Lorraine Bracco, directed by Martin Scorsese. Based on a true-life best seller called Wiseguy by Nicholas Pileggi and featuring golden oldies sound track this film shows the "glamorous" side and the violent side of being in the mob. Narrated by Ray Liotta as Henry Hill, he takes you through his life from a young boy right up to when it all came to an end. Compellingly and violently brilliant film.
