Gary has the ability to travel back and forward in time between the present (1995 version) and London during the blitz.
However the main reason Gary travels back and forth is because of his two love interests, Phoebe and Yvonne, and the first three series were interesting and fun without being hilarious or ground breaking.
I would probably give the first three seasons 3 or 4 stars, then...
But when season 4 begins two of the main characters (his two main reasons for time travel) are portrayed by totally different people?? Are we not supposed to notice that Phoebe isn't Phoebe any more or that Yvonne isn't Yvonne? Dervla Kirwan's performance was one of the main reasons I enjoyed this series and I believe she left because she felt her character wasn't evolving, so could the writers not sit down with her and see if a compromise could be reached? If not could they not write her out of the series properly and create a new character?
I'm fully aware that actors move on or pass on in a long running series, but this happened after only three seasons and involved almost half the main characters. The options were to either call an end to the series (not necessarily a bad ending because it finished with Gary caught in a 'double dilemma' situation) or to get creative with the writing. Unfortunately they chose the lazy option and just dropped new actors into the same characters
In Only Fools and Horses for example (another Nicholas Lyndhurst series) the actor playing Granddad passed away in real life after a couple of series so they brought in Buster Merrifield, not to become the 'new granddad' but as Uncle Albert, a new character with his own personality but also having some similar traits to the departed granddad. This is the proper way to deal with changes in personnel should you want to continue a series.
So because of the writers inability to deal with cast changes properly it's 2 stars from me.

Worth watching, however like any long-running series it has its ups and downs, but New Viewers stick with it, the highs outweigh the lows. Just make sure you know a little bit of the history of the time, which will help you enjoy it all the more.
Oh, don't worry about the old TV picture size; if you get into the stories you soon won't notice the black bars - this is preferable (in my eyes) to stretching the image sideways to fill a modern screen, or cropping off the top and bottom to achieve the same.
Yup, in summary; Good Stuff.
