Enhance your purchase
Screen legend Steve McQueen (Bullitt) slams his motorcycle into high gear and leads the way in this action-packed classic about a group of Allied POWs who attempt one of the largest and most daring breakouts in history. A masterful collaboration between director John Sturges (Bad Day at Black Rock), screenwriters James Clavell (The Satan Bug) and W.R. Burnett (Little Caesar) and composer Elmer Bernstein (The Magnificent Seven), The Great Escape is one of the most ingenious and suspenseful adventure films of all time! As World War II rages on, the Germans open Stalag Luft III, a maximum security prisoner-of-war camp, designed to hold even the craftiest escape artists. In doing so, however, the Nazis unwittingly assemble the finest escape team in military history. Together, under the guidance of the brilliant Bartlett (Richard Attenborough, Brighton Rock), the resourceful Hendley (James Garner, Support Your Local Sheriff) and the steely, determined Hilts (McQueen), the men plot, scheme and dig their way to freedom…at any cost! Charles Bronson (Breakheart Pass), James Coburn (A Fistful of Dynamite), Donald Pleasence (The Black Windmill), James Donald (The Bridge on the River Kwai) and David McCallum (Mosquito Squadron) fill out the iconic cast of this spectacular, true-life blockbuster. The Great Escape received a 1964 Academy Award nomination for Best Film Editing (Ferris Webster, The Manchurian Candidate) and a Golden Globe nomination for Best Motion Picture—Drama.

It is many years since I seen this movie but still find it as interesting as some scenes show the actual actions that took place.
The blu ray itself is beautifully restored. Excellent picture quality and great sound. Certainly looks better than I remember it. It’s a great restoration.
And there are some great extras on the film and the history behind it - I didn’t realised it was based on a true story.
Great cast, great film, really nice to own it as I will watch it again.

Set in Germany, WW2, an amassing of all the most difficult allied P.O.W. into one German camp. Some P.O.W are under stress, some are calculating how to get out. The plan is to dig tunnels and give all those people rations, clothing, maps, identity cards, the full set of identity items. Their plans are brilliant, secret, and giving those locked within the camp something to live for, what happens next?
It is an iconic movie based on a true story. The DVD has a background documentary explaining this. This movie used to be a byword for repeated Xmas movies, but it's still a great film brilliantly played by all the cast. The famous motorcycle leap is one sticking in your mind.
The film has a fair pace, not a smasher pace, the film allows itself to breathe , banging the door down at close to 3 hours. The characters get into your mind and there are feelings to be shared.
If you dont own this then i would look at yourself and say hey, i need this classic escape movie with the great theme , the great cast, the great script and memorable moments..
