There are many Americas. The America of “Gypsy” is the Liberal, therapy-immersed, sloppy cashmere- and flowing cape- wearing, well-rewarded, distracted and self-deceiving urban middle-class. (Therapy can be a good thing in specific circumstances, btw.)
It’s the America likely to return to power this autumn on the (mostly) young backs of BLM, XR, Saunders fans and other groups who are - let us be honest - the rightful and lovely inheritors of a world totally messed up by the rest of us. “The rest of us” includes those about to take back the reins, btw. (The hope now rising in America is absolutely heart-breaking.)
“Gypsy’s” America is the land of the oblivious. The savagery of this America is “laundered”, or washed so the dirt falls downward, like the dirty money on which the entire edifice depends. (I’m not anti-American. I live in the UK, a “ship” steered by England whose capital, London, is the dirtiest city in the world. Laundron, more like.)
Engaging hour after hour with the mannered and destructive inhabitants of a very specific culture left me feeling ungrounded, unhappy and none the wiser in any way I could think of. Sorry, architects of premise. But I kept watching “Gypsy” for the superb acting, right across the board. Naomi Watts is a revelation as the main character Jean. And Blythe Danner is powerfully good in her role as Jean’s mother. (Where are the big roles for the likes of Blythe Danner, btw? Oh. Wait a minute. We’re talking about middle-aged woman.)
Even the extras are first rate. I re-ran scenes to scrutinize them. That can be fun, but I have to concede the extras here are all very skilled.
On the downside of detail, the background music was traipsing and discordant, and I do wish I could have turned it off. An “embarrassing silence” of a background would have worked much better. Silence - save for sounds integral to the story - would have helped put seriously-bad behaviour into moral perspective. And a bit more perspective would have earned “Gypsy” four stars. (A whole lot more would have earned it five.)
Again, the acting kept me watching. Fair dues. Three stars out of three for the acting.
Final mention to an extraordinary Stevie Nicks song which opens each episode. It might be called “Gypsy”, or “She Was A Wish” (?) The hairline cracks in Stevie Nicks’ voice seem to let out vast amounts of sorrow and love. I call this sort of thing natural magic. If you want your heart broken again, dedicate that song, as it plays, to all those young Americans - and Belorussians and Lebanese - out on the streets...

A very interesting Netflix series that unfortunately lasted one season. I really enjoyed Naomi Watts performance and only wished this show could have continued longer than it did!
