Wonderful Advent experience

I’m so thankful for this book. We have three kids 7, 4 and 2. It’s the first year an advent resource has really worked for us. We played the section of Messiah over dinner, I read the scripture portion / poems after I finished eating while kids were still eating. And then played the suggested Advent hymns / carols after that. The kids often got up and danced along after finishing eating. We did an advent wreath with LED candles. We were away on holiday for 10 days during advent and it was easy to bring this book, LED candles and Bluetooth speaker to be able to do the devotions while we were away. Most days it took no longer than 10 minutes but over the season added up to be a very rich and wonderful experience.

I've heard many people lament that starting an Advent tradition seems overwhelming -- so many ideas and traditions and where do you even start?!

Cindy Rollins has written a wonderful guide for families to begin their own family Advent observance.

Each day has short readings from the Bible and segments of Handel's Messiah, and each week includes suggestions for an Advent hymn, poetry, and memory work. It is presented in such a way that families can easily do more or do less, based on what their family needs.

Our family's Advent observance has grown through the years, and this year I'm looking forward to using this guide and listening to the Messiah.

(And I've purchased extra copies as gifts for several people in our extended family!)

The heart of this book is simple - a short Scripture reading followed by a brief selection from the Messiah. Even a family with no musical background can appreciate the beauty of Handel’s masterpiece. Those already familiar with Handel will love the opportunity to meditate on Christ’s coming through listening to the Messiah bit by bit.

The additional resources truly round out the book. I gleaned fantastic ideas for making advent and Christmas meaningful for my family, and I enjoyed the hymn of the week, poems, essays, and Scripture memory suggestions.

It’s definitely worth the purchase! I’m looking forward to using it with my children for many years. We love it so much we are going to gift a copy to my husband’s parents for Christmas.

I just love how this book is laid out with a weekly format to use to celebrate Advent by introducing new traditions to savor featuring songs, readings and recipes for Advent.
