TOP 50 REVIEWER
4.0 out of 5 starsINTERESTING, BUT VERY ANGSTY 3.5 STARS
Reviewed in Australia on 31 July 2022
I haven’t read a narrative centring around young adults in ages, but Colleen Hoover made it interesting, focusing on the typical vulnerabilities of this demographic, as well as vulnerabilities particular to main characters, Beyah and Samson.
‘Heart Bones’ focuses on the theme of trust, acceptance and finding your place to belong (including people to belong to). It’s actually quite sad (angsty too) and confronting at times with various, personal, unseen challenges ... some overwhelming, secretive and dark.
The concluding chapters had me thinking, yeh I know where we’re heading plot wise, but there was a surprising twist that I wasn’t expecting. It all ended in a turbulent way, but with a healthy slice of hope. Why ‘Heart Bones’? Because if hearts break, they would need bones. Bones can heal, so hearts can heal, too. See – angsty as it gets.

More like a romance novel than a mystery. But a good read . Gets a little bit too mushy and everything works out so rosey and perfect . Not exactly real life , but a good escape an ok book

Cute story with too much first person voice and the outcome of the novel is predictable and typical of Hallmark stories.

Das Buch ist natürlich super. Aber es ist leider zerknittert und dreckig angekommen. Schade. Ich hätte dazu auch gerne eine Rückmeldung erhalten.

2.0 out of 5 stars Annoying cliche characters

I have to admire CoHo for keeping her resolve to have the dumbest named characters in all her books. Beyah (sigh) is a 19 year old recent high school graduate whose mother overdosed in their trailer, leaving Beyah homeless. She's pissed about having to stay with her dad for two months until she starts college, but she quickly adapts to the comforts of her new life. Although any athlete who receives a fall sports scholarship would have to report to school long before August, but I guess that would ruin the plot with believability.

Beyah is poor. She likes to bludgeon people with that fact in case they forget. No one's had it as hard as her, ok? No one was ever there for her, ok? Except it seems like her dad was trying and it was Beyah who ignored his attempts to reach out. Perhaps if she'd let him in just a little bit, things would have gotten a lot better in her life.

Beyah meets Samson, who seems sketchy and untrustworthy, and she doesn't want to like him, but he's super good looking so...
He won't tell her anything about him, but Beyah somehow knows he's a really good person, so...
He's not like other guys (truthful?), he's deep. He watches the sunrise! He often has a look in his eyes like he's thinking deep thoughts!

Samson's big secrets finally come out and Beyah is annoyed that he has to face consequences. The epilogue set four years later is so over-the-top ridiculous that I thought I was reading a fairytale.

I’m not going to review this book because I’m much older then a teenager, and this book is definitely geared toward young, teenage readers. I miss the older Colleen Hoover stories.

2.0 out of 5 stars Fell flat

I usually like this author, and have read most of her books. This one fell flat. After closing it I can’t really tell you what the story was about. The plot line was out of touch with reality and didn’t make a ton of sense. It felt like every character was just a trope. I feel bad leaving a negative review because I am a fan, but I want to save you readers some time on this one.

I guess it’s bound to happen with an author jut this book was my least favorite. It started off really good and then.. I don’t know.. but it could also be that I’m 29 and find it difficult to relate to the character..
