An Amazon Charts and Wall Street Journal bestselling series.
What family secrets are behind two disappearances? Seattle detective Tracy Crosswhite is determined to uncover the truth in the latest installment of New York Times bestselling author Robert Dugoni's heart-stopping series.
Returning from an extended leave in her hometown of Cedar Grove, Detective Tracy Crosswhite finds herself reassigned to the Seattle PD's cold case unit. As the protective mother of an infant daughter, Tracy is immediately drawn to her first file: the abduction of a five-year-old girl whose parents, embattled in a poisonous divorce, were once prime suspects.
While reconstructing the days leading up to the girl's disappearance, Tracy is brought into an active investigation with former partner Kinsington Rowe. A young woman has vanished on an isolated jogging trail in North Seattle. Divided between two critical cases, Tracy has little to go on except the treacherous deceptions behind a broken marriage--and now, the secrets hiding behind the closed doors of a deceptively quiet middle-class neighborhood.
To find two missing persons, Tracy will have to follow more than clues, which are both long cold and unsettlingly fresh. Given her own traumatic past, Tracy must also follow her instincts--to whatever dark and dangerous places they may lead.

Solid police procedural. Overlong epilogue ostensibly to tie cases together but more to consolidate the personal growth of the protagonist.

Getting straight to work reading through the files left by the former officer in charge Tracy is drawn to an unsolved missing child case just as her former partner asks for help on a suspected abduction. As she sifts through clues in both investigations Tracy is faced with dead ends and untruths which take time she doesn't have to unravel. With the weather worsening and office politics hindering her progress she has to wonder if either case will have a successful outcome.
Tracy Crosswhite is a relatable, likeable main protagonist who has matured and grown throughout this extremely popular and satisfying series. There is a comprehension of the problems Tracy has had and is now experiencing which show an understanding from the author of the differing effects of trauma on those who suffer life changing events. However chilling the crimes, and these are definitely that, the way the book reads is, as usual, sympathetic from the get go.
I was able to read an advanced copy of this book thanks to NetGalley and the publishers but the opinions expressed are my own. This is an excellent read which will leave you feeling a little better about the world we live in.

Having said that, I really enjoy Robert Dugoni’s books, and having read them all I have been looking forward to this one, and I wasn’t disappointed. Despite the foregoing, I couldn’t put it down until I’d finished it!
I do enjoy the realism of the characters; I’ve followed Tracy Crosswhite’s career from her Acadamy days and her first run-in with Nolasco and although her life experience has been far removed from my own, it has the ring of realism about it. Robert Dugoni’s books illustrate that it is possible to have realism without foul language and ‘without’ the bedroom door!
Anyone who enjoys police procedurals, with realistic characters, relationships and situations will enjoy this book.

There were some funny moments in this one, I must say, especially the swelling remarks back 'n' forth. I did like little Elle and her story runs alongside another case in the book and I hate to say it but I forgot the other story till we got towards the end as the other took precedence. Some parts I thought were a little reminiscent of Making A Murderer. It was interesting seeing Tracy in a slightly differing role, though at least we still see the regular personnel she has always worked alongside. I don't really know why Maria wasn't offered the alternative role, however, since she was the new person in the department. It should have been Tracy's choice. I liked Therese a lot, too.
I did highlight a line from Lisa, "What then are you going to do" which is arse-about-face English, I thought. Then 2 missing women were being discussed but he referred to "their disappearance" and "no body found" so both instances should have been in the plural as they weren't both snatched at the same time and there were 2....but I did smile when he mentions someone being "pinched for solicitation" as I thought that was a very English description !!
I did get a wee bit worn down with the constant introspection about her job that went on in this instalment with Tracy but I guess it was a big step so had to go with it. It just started to get on my nerves a bit. A line near the end made me howl when she took someone to visit somebody else....I'm saying no more as it would be spoilery !! If you're interested it occurred on page 367 at 93% in.....it was a touching instance.
A series I'll definitely be sticking with as it is always great entertainment.

Looking forward to Book 9. Another 5 stars from this happy reader.
