A laugh-out-loud read from the Sunday Times bestselling author of If I Never Met You
Anna Alessi – history expert, possessor of a lot of hair and an occasionally filthy mouth – seeks nice man for intelligent conversation and Mills & Boon moments.
Despite the oddballs that keep turning up on her dates, Anna couldn’t be happier. As a 30-something with a job she loves, life has turned out better than she dared dream. However, things weren’t always this way, and her years spent as the ‘Italian Galleon’ of an East London comprehensive are ones she’d rather forget.
So when James Fraser – the architect of Anna’s final humiliation at school – walks back into her life, her world is turned upside down. But James seems a changed man. Polite. Mature. Funny, even. People can change, right? So why does Anna feel like she’s a fool to trust him?
Hilarious and poignant, Here’s Looking At You will have you laughing one minute and crying the next. The new must-read novel from #1 bestseller Mhairi McFarlane.

Extremely well handled on some tough issues. It was a beautiful story. However I think the author needs to 2 beta readers. One from Australia and one from the US. Because I struggled to understand the context of what she was saying to the point I had to ask google for a lot of clarification. I think this could have been the reason why I maybe didn't laugh as much as intended.
"Fled back to Australia."
"No."
"Yes, poor Down Under. At least they're used to felons."
Where did those 'felons' originate? Any idea? It wouldn't be the UK, by any chance?

Anna's successful and well-respected in her chosen career, and she tried to be upbeat about her less successful personal life. Bullied at school for her size and looks, her sense of self is knotted in a complicated way round events of sixteen years ago. A chance encounter with someone from her past has unexpected results.
Very funny in places but also touching, I cried.

Fat and frumpy at school, Anna has grown into a beautiful woman. So when she meets James who mercifully teased her at school, she’s not expecting to like him. But it appears that James has also grown up and as their friendship develops so do their feelings. Will Anna be able to find a way to put the past behind her and let James into her life?
A great book with excellent characters which was an enjoyable read.

I think Anna makes for an interesting leading lady. She is clearly very insecure and so some of the choices she makes aren't ones she should be making or are rushed, but this makes for some very interesting moments in the book. Her sister provides the comedy in this novel, her ways with her finances and her fiancé are really entertaining and yet she comes through in the end, helping Anna and helping herself. Bully James seems totally cute, I can't believe he used to behave that way in high school, but like Anna, I found him difficult to trust initially...
There's something for everyone in this novel, interesting historical exhibitions, two weddings planned, a fabulous fabulous best friend and a will they won't they love story that will have you on the edge of your seat reading this one! The way this writer explains things an describes something is also a truly beautiful element of the book. She uses the most fantastical figurative language and I think I'm going to use some of her examples whe teaching similes at school from now one because some are deep and meaningful and some downright hilarious! I so enjoyed this book, it was a quick read, an enjoyable read and has stayed with me since the moment I put it down!

For those of you who have read 'You Had Me At Hello', you will spot something similar with the overall theme in that boy returns into girl's life several years down the line, although any similarities end there. Anna Alessi has been rebuilding her life after James Fraser humiliated her at school and is none too pleased to meet him again firstly at a school reunion and then through her work. However, because Anna has changed so much and because she no longer goes by her full name, James has not worked out who Anna is. It is one of those stories where it has plenty of uplifting moments and laugh-out-loud moments, there are times where you want to get frustrated at the characters as you want them to get past their issues and also times where you want to feel upset for them when it doesn't look like it will go to plan. It is the fact that Anna and James go through many situations, good and bad, that makes them feel real and feel that you can relate to them. It brings out plenty of emotions and it is a story that I didn't know which way it will turn out until the very end.
An fantastic read that I struggled to put down - finding that I was having a couple of late nights as 'one more chapter' became a few more chapters and taking my Kindle out and about with me so I could read it at any spare moment. I was reeled in from the first page and I was disappointed to see it end. A recommended read for those who like the romance genre and to those who loved 'You Had Me At Hello'.
