'The Hidden Staircase' is the third book in the Hounds of Penhallow series. Polly and her mother live at stately Penhallow Hall where her mother is the caretaker. Every day visitors come to the stately home to see and be a part of its long history. Polly is the only one who can see the ghosts of Penhallow Hall and they, particularly the ghost dogs, are her companions and friends and with them by her side she solves mysteries and learns about the history of the Hall and the wider world. In this book, Polly is finally starting at her new school so has to negotiate all the traumas of that while trying to help a little ghost dog in the nursery that does not want to be helped.
Like the others in this series this is a moving story about love, loss and friendship. Polly learns a bit about children who were evacuated to Penhallow Hall during World War II and a little more about Britain during this time. Holly Webb is a consummate story teller who can really make you feel her characters are real and the events are really happening right in front of you as you read and that makes her work very emotionally satisfying for the reader.
Highly recommended.

Penhallow is full of dogs, Polly. Look around and you'll see. We're everywhere. We always have been.
Polly and Rex are delighted when the old toy dog stirs on the nursery shelf. But Skip wants to be left alone! Then Polly shows a new classmate around Penhallow, and she seems strangely drawn to the little dog, too. Could she be the friend Skip needs?
