Shay
Six years ago, the good, upstanding men of Stonecut County ran me off. I took a secret with me. An inconvenient truth they wanted buried.
Actions have consequences. Their perfect golden boy maybe wasn't so perfect after all.
When life hands me one too many lemons, I'm forced to go back, and in Stonecut, nothing ever changes.
Kellum Wall is still golden. I'm still unwanted. And being swayed by his cocksure smile will most certainly ruin my life all over again.
Kellum
I believe there are still good men left in this world, and I strive to be one. I was raised to live by a code. God and country. Protect and serve.
I always do the right thing, even when it's hard—and yet, somehow, I've made an unforgivable mistake.
I want what I lost. The woman, the child, the white picket fence. But it's not gonna come easy.
Shay's a survivor. She doesn't believe in happy ever after, and earning her trust might be the hardest thing I've ever done.
She's got my heart in her hands, though, and this time—I'm not letting her slip through my fingers.
Hitting the Wall is a steamy, small town romance featuring a secret baby and a second chance at love. It is the first book in the Stonecut County series. It is intended only for adult readers.

Forever fighting. Shay Crowley may come from rough beginnings but the moment she was handed her daughter at 17 years old, it dawned on her. She was a mama, alone and responsible for a child. Shay may have gotten pregnant by the golden boy of Stonecut County, but its clear this parenting gig is a solo one. Yet it all changes when she returns to the town she was run off from.
When the moment of truth slaps you in the face, there’s no escaping everything you’ve messed up. Deputy Sheriff Kellum Wall is content living in a small town where he’s lived all his life. His family are founding members and life is grand. Except learning he fathered a child and the ramifications of that one stolen evening; nothing will be the same again.
Although this is a slow burn romance, there is so much to experience and feel. The disparity between rich and poor and the lengths people go to will keep Shay and Kellum apart. But more importantly it’s about a parents’ love for their child. You see their daughter Mia is different, autistic. It’s the challenges you face wanting to give your child a ‘normal’ life. However, the moment Kellum re-enters their lives, these girls no longer need to fight alone.
I spent the first half of the book wanting to sob, and the second mooning over newfound love. Both Shay and Kellum were standout. Where Shay was a warrior, Kellum was a little gullible but he was kind and genuine. There was no doubt it was meant to end well even if their struggles felt insurmountable at times. If it wasn’t for the quick and too tidy ending, it would have been perfect.
This a love story between Kellum, a man who believes he’s better than he is, and Shay, a woman and mother, who has been taught she’s much less than she is.
Kellum is the golden boy, who is willing to deny the rot at the heart of his family and his town, in order to be comfortable. But his willingness to do the easy thing means he is deeply unhappy, but not honest enough to question his luck.
When Shay returns to Stonecut, her unflinching courage and honesty force Kellum to re-examine everything he thought to be true.
There are problems with the plotting; it’s not entirely clear how the finances of the family are organised. The ending wraps a bit quickly. The bad guys signal their hands with such a lack of subtlety, you want to shake Kellum for being so naive.
But the great strength of this writer is in the small details of characters and the fragile moments which build a relationship. Kellum’s naivety might be annoying, but it allows him an open-hearted willingness to accept Shay and Mia and learn to love them.
Shay’s need for love and support enable her to forgive Kallum, the nearly unforgivable. Each uses the touchstone of their first encounter as a moment when each of them were free of expectations. They remember how it felt to be free and use that connection to find their way together.
One aspect of this book which I really appreciate is Care C Well’s clearsighted understanding of the ways in which class, education and money impact heavily on how people are treated.
I genuinely enjoyed this book, flaws and all. Romance, as a genre, relies heavily on tropes. As a reader what I hope to find is a writer talented enough to make those tropes fresh again. Hitting the Wall was one of those gems for me.

I loved how amazing Shay was with Mia and Shay's strength.
