As to the Blu-Ray itself, it is region free (actually regions A,B,C) so you can confidently order it as an import, knowing that it will play on your UK player. I watched it on a 46 inch screen and I have to say it looked very nice to my eyes.
The disk replicates the theatrical presentation in that the first part of the film, which is set in New York and its environs, is matted to a letterbox which has black bars on all four sides. The screen then expands to the full 2.35:1 Panavision ratio when the film transitions to Montana. The film is frequently gorgeous to look at and kudos go to DP Robert Richardson and his 2nd Unit crew for the often stunning cinematography. The New York sequences have a cool, sharp look to them, while the Montana sequences are softer (perhaps using filters) and frequently sun-dappled. The film is pre-digital. By that I mean it was shot on film and finished chemically and it looks great.
The disk offers a 5.1 DTS Master Audio mix. Dialogue is crisp and clear, while music and effects are spread across the front speakers. Thomas Newmans' score really benefits from the lossless presentation and has good presence.
Extras, which I've not yet watched, include a production featurette, and featurette's on Robert Redford and Buck Brannaman plus a music video.
Great picture and sound. If you are a Redford fan or enjoyed the Nicholas Evans book, then this a no-brainer purchase.
Nobody can do male mystique quite like Robert Redford. The Electric Horseman, An Unfinished Life,Out of Africa )
Kristen Scott Thomas plays rushed New York journo whose daughter and pony have horrible accident leaving horse and rider physically and mentally scarred.
Bright, beautiful daughter goes into major slump and mum decides to take both to "horse whisperer" out in the sticks in the hope that the horse can be cured and her daughter returned to her.
All fall under the spell of Redfords quiet, intense charm and isolation, hard won through his own personal loss and tragedy.
There's no guile or deception about him, and that confuses the sophisticated and highly strung Scott Thomas.
It's a love story for grown-ups, bitter and sweet in equal measure. Scott Thomas as always is the beautiful, cool English aristocrat, but with her own brand of simmering, repressed passion that she does so well.
Scarlet Johansen gives a glimpse of the accomplished actress she has shown herself to be.
It's a lovely sad, romantic 2 hours.
This is a lovely story but very sad but the acting is superb, a must for any horse lovers
