A dark secret. A haunted past. And a house full of lies.
When two teenage girls vanish without a trace from an educational retreat at Chidlow House in Lincolnshire, the students and teachers are put on high alert.
Called in to investigate, Detective Karen Hart questions everyone who came into contact with the two girls, Cressida and Natasha, in the days leading up to their disappearance.
Stories of Chidlow House being haunted abound, but Hartβstill coming to terms with the suspicious circumstances surrounding the tragic loss of her own familyβknows that while the house might be otherworldly, the crime is grimly real.
But nothing is quite as it seems at Chidlow House. When it becomes clear that someone at the estate must know more than theyβre letting on, Hart faces a race against time to find the culprit and save the girls.
While there is no shortage of suspects, Hart comes up against one dead end after another. And when she too begins hearing eerie whispers in the walls, she is forced to wonder: was she too quick to dismiss Chidlowβs supernatural reputation?

About the author

Iβm Danica and I write under the names D. S. Butler, Dani Oakley and Danica Britton. If youβve stumbled across this author page after having read one of my books, thank you very much for your support.
I write mysteries in many different flavours β some grittier than others. So far, I've written two standalone psychological thrillers: Lost Child and Her Missing Daughter. I also write a detective series set in London, which features one of my favourite characters, Jack Mackinnon.
The books I write as Dani Oakley are set in the East End of London. They are full of gangsters and strong female characters.

right to the end
The storyline in Book 4 is an interesting one. A creepy house to set the tone and foreboding mood of the story, the death of a teacher, 2 teenage girls are missing, a number of questionable characters are possible suspects, and the team are finding their feet after the events of the last story. Sometimes during a series, one of the books hits a lull and isnβt is as good as previous books, Iβm happy to say itβs not this one! Looking forward to Book 5 and the rest of the series.

This is the fourth book in the DS Karen Hart series and is another enjoyable instalment. The main protagonists are all present but this time they are joined by other characters caught up in both sides of the investigation in many different ways.
Unfortunately, although there were no shortage of suspects available, some of them seemed a little stereotypical. Obviously there is a reason stereotyping occurs but the story could have been lifted by a surprise or two along the way. Without any spoilers a few of the outcomes were ones which are well used in the crime genre. However, the lack of possible motives when the hunt for the missing girls began created a tense atmosphere which worked well alongside the previously mentioned inclement weather.
There is a back story running throughout these books related to the tragedy which colours every aspect of Karen Hart's life. There is a big step forward hinted at here and I am looking forward to finding out what will happen to her next.
I was able to read an advanced copy of this book thanks to NetGalley and the publishers in exchange for an unbiased review and would recommend it to anyone who is already enjoying this series or who doesn't mind dropping in mid arc.

This book tells the story of two young girls who go missing from a residential study course, held at a countryside stately home. We are introduced to the usual array of suspicious characters as the story progresses, some of whom are rather too 'suspicious' to be real contenders, but it keeps you guessing nonetheless.
There are one or two seemingly pointless sidelines and a couple of silly errors when it comes to police procedure and points of law, but keeping those to one side, this is an easy to read, enjoyable detective novel. I've just purchased the next in the series, so am looking forward to getting stuck in.

Book #5 in the DS Karen Hart series and I couldn't put my Kindle down. 2 girls go missing from a study group at a stately home. DI Morgan, Karen and the team investigate.
There are more red herrings than a Whitby kipper factory! Excellent π
If you liked the previous books in the series, you'll really enjoy this one too. The best book in the series thus far. Now I am really looking forward to book #6. ππ
