""The Hypnotist's Love Story "is an intensely absorbing, excellently written tale that turns Fatal Attraction on its head--finally! Told with wit, charm, empathy, and plenty of suspense, you'll regret turning the pages so fast to find out how it ends. "I loved this book. It has, for me, everything that makes a good novel excellent: A delightful protagonist and her equally delightful love trying to overcome obstacles they do not fully understand; several fascinating families all jumbled into an iconoclastic mix; good friends and peculiar neighbors and difficult children and wonderfully loving relationships. "Simultaneously a page-turner and a book one has to put down occasionally to think about and absorb, Moriarty's novel challenges the reader as well as her characters, but in the best possible way." --"Publishers Weekly"
"At first, this reviewer wanted to warn readers not to be taken in by the light tone of Liane Moriarty's "The Husband's Secret." On second thought, maybe readers should let this rather crafty novelist's deceptive breeziness and humor sweep them along. It makes the shocks just that much more deliciously nasty, including the gob-smacking twist in the epilogue. . . . The genius of "The Husband's Secret "is that it makes us start to wonder what in our own lives would--or would not--have happened if, say, we had waited just five more minutes before we walked out the door, had not said that hurtful thing, had applied a bit of logic to that situation." --"Bookpage"

"Liane Moriarty ("What Alice Forgot") is far more than the skillful writer of potboilers. Her compelling characters could be your friends and neighbors, nice and neurotic in equal doses. . . . I guessed the secret fairly early though Moriarty did a good job trying to throw me off. Occasionally I got a bit bored by the banal conversation / thinking, however pushing through that I enjoyed the story.
Lots of characters and subplots that connect together as the story goes on and all culminate in a shared ending though obviously with different outcomes for everyone. I didn’t really feel satisfied at the end or that everything wrapped up fully, though I understand they were real and flawed characters and it was meant to leave you thinking. I didn’t overly love the ending for Tess, Liam and Will and particularly felt that not everything got wrapped up there though I know I am being finicky but even little stuff like Liam’s schooling, their agency and the plane hand holding etc. I think if something is introduced to the reader it needs to be wrapped up. Also I liked Tess so was disappointed with her ending.
I liked the sliding doors epilogue to give you ideas of what else could have been.
I did feel that Janie’s ending was flawed, considering she had a doctors appointment, I think that would have been investigated more.
A good read though with lots to unpack.
Ordinary families are not ordinary people, even though we always assume they are. It is so safe to accept that each of us is just 'getting on with life' and 'what you see is what you get'. This story makes sure you become aware that is not true.
People hold terrible secrets, not just from the outside world but within their families and others in the family sometimes know.
In this case each member is clear cut, their reactions are strong and the reader is drawn along each wishing something good would come out of it all. Something good is not always recognisable, and in this case it is more what life is really all about, accepting the truth and growing to live with it.
A worthwhile thought provoking story that is very hard to put down.
I couldn’t put this book down..
The twist in the tale leaves you wondering.... there is no satisfactory conclusion. The author leaves you guessing to the very end.

The story revolves around a woman who has found a letter from her husband which contains a secret that will change many lives.
The problem with Moriarty I find is how prescriptive she is. Similar to Dan Brown, she seems to have found a formula that works for her and she uses and reuses it in all her books. So they all seem like the same book. There's always gossipy women. There's always flitting from one key character to another per chapter, so that you are peeping into the lives of several different women. All of these lives come together at some colliding moment in the book. It's all very formulaic. Which means these books are great when you dont want to tax your mind, want something easy to dip in and out of, something that will while away the long hours on an airplane or in the hospital ER. But they are not the kind of books that will cause a revolution in your life or change the way you view the world.
It seems to be working for her, so yeah...a light read it is.
