So sorry. I tried - I really did and I made it to nearly a third of the way through. But it was all just gung-ho blood and guts, non-stop action with lashings of killer whales and so little characterisation that I really didn't care who lived or died. Not for me.

This is a military action adventure and boy does the author keep the pace going! The book is like a continuous Bond film action sequence. This isn't really a good thing as you need gaps in the action to develop decent characterisation and plot, which this book seriously lacks.

As a Brit I didn't like the fact the SAS are the bad guys in this book.

The book is filled with inconsistencies. For example at one point our hero loses radio contact because he has lost his helmet, which has the radio attached. Then a moment later he receives a radio message through his earpiece! At another point he escapes from some handcuffs using some det cord the bad guys missed in a search and then pulls out a stun grenade and a crossbow that were still in his pockets! So they missed those in the search too! Really?

Annoyingly the author refers to all sorts of imaginary military hardware such as the "maghook and "nitrogen charges" etc. Why? The book would have been so much better if he had decently researched accurate hardware.

It was fun in a rather teenage way, but I doubt I will continue the series. There are far better military action books out there.

I actually read this book over 10 years ago and absolutely loved it! It was great to be able to read it again. I am a fan of Matthew Reilly as he knows how to weave a good story., and pulls no punches (although somewhat far fetched, but who cares!). He pulls you into the story and you can feel yourself right there. As this is the first in the series of Scarecrow you get to know about all the characters and you can't but not like Scarecrow in his quest for taking out the baddies who want world domination! In Ice Station you have Scarecrow and team heading to Antarctica - there is something hidden in the ice that has now caused concern and all the nation's want a part of it. Hold onto your seats as you are in for one hell of a story, and it could be hell getting there and back out again. I would highly recommended this book to anyone who wants to just escape, but beware once started you won't be able to put it down!

The story was fast paced but it seemed to contradict its self. If describes 50 commands as the best in the world and then they act like they Have never been in combat. There were too many coincidences in the book the hero need a bomb he finds one. How can you fight under water with a broken nose and a cracked rib . The start of the story say you can't fly in as it is too cold and the fuel will freeze but by the end if the book they have a dog fight. It starts off well but the more you read at some point you will say "really"
