1.0 out of 5 starsFor action-movie fans only

So sorry. I tried - I really did and I made it to nearly a third of the way through. But it was all just gung-ho blood and guts, non-stop action with lashings of killer whales and so little characterisation that I really didn't care who lived or died. Not for me.

3.0 out of 5 stars More suited to 12 year olds.

One of those novels where if the hero is in a tight situation and needs a certain piece of equipment to relieve his perilous situation, it will be provided in the most unbelievable fashion. In fact, so much of the story stretches credibility, that the book is more suited to something like a 'Boy's Own Annual' than fiction directed at adults.I won't be reading this author again.

1.0 out of 5 stars If you like good books - don't read this one.

If this had been a paper back I would of thrown it in the bin but since it's an e-book I didn't get that satisfaction. Totally unbelievable plot and action sequences. If you like movies like Fast and Furious this a written in the same vain - totally ridiculous. If you have a brain, avoid this book.

From the start this was unrealistic & unbelievable. This should have a rating of "suitable only for children". Will not be buying his books again.

The writing is very good. It's a shame the author uses it for action movies. This book is exactly that. An action movie with unbelievable events. I suggest reading this than watching an action movie. On the other hand, an actual movie will have sound :)
You can "see" the environment that the author is showing. However, you cannot feel a lot. You don't really understand what the characters feel.
I would only recommend this for people this like books with action.

3.0 out of 5 stars Matt Reilly Can Write Action but......
Reviewed in the United States on 14 March 2010

This was my first (last?) Matt Reilly experience and I've got mixed feelings about "Ice Station." First, I think that it's safe to say that Mr. Reilly has a great command of writing actions sequences. I would also say that he had an interesting plot line for this novel. That being said, he would be well-served to bring his stories out of cartoon land and limit the number of unbelievable events suffered by his hero. There's simply too, too much of it all and it is hard to suspend belief and really enjoy the ride. It's this over-kill of action that I believe diminished the fun of the later Clive Cussler novels. They were great in the earlier novels but started to get boring when they replaced the story with non-stop ridiculous actions sequences. Bring the writing down to earth and maybe Matt Reilly would have something interesting to offer.

3.0 out of 5 stars A little too fantastical for me...

This author was recommended to me by a friend and fellow action/adventure reader. I wasn't really sure what to expect as I hadn't read anything about the author previously. Once into the book, I was hooked immediately. The action was swift and the characters were well written. It came to a point though where the events became too unbelievable. I'm a big fan of the James Rollins Sigma Series and this topped even those books for outlandish escapes and survivalism. In retrospect, I wish I would have known that going in because it would have made the book more enjoyable with proper expectations set. I have just started Area 7 and with the knowledge of how Ice Station was written, I'm sure to enjoy that one just a little more.
