Ismael Vuillard (Mathieu Amalric) makes films. Along with Henri Bloom (Laszlo Szabo), his master and father-in-law, he still mourns the death of Carlotta (Marion Cotillard) from twenty years ago. Carlotta returns from the dead but Ismael has rebuilt his life with Sylvia (Charlotte Gainsbourg) and is working on his next feature film, inspired by his brother. As Ismael's trials and tribulations unfurl, so too do those of his film's protagonist: the idle, funny and reckless diplomat, Ivan Dedalus (Louis Garrel).

A film director's wife reappears after a twenty year absence which causes eruptions and friction with his current partner.
The first hour is langourous and subtle, like a novel, but it then stalls and goes off the rails as the director has a breakdown and we see snippets of the unfinished film he is making, a farcical drama involving diplomats and spies. It sort of comes back on track with a happy ending but this can't repair the damage of the derailment.
Luminous photography, fine performances from Almaric, Gainsbourg and Cottillard and a moving score, almost imperceptible in the background. Shades of Hitchcock, with Carlotta a reference to 'Vertigo' and a snatch of music from 'Marnie'. The jumping between the story and the film within the films recalled Resnais, but without his style and rigour.
Desplechin has always been an offbeat and unpredictable talent but this one misfires.
The subtitles are Dutch and therefore the DVD is of no use to me.

A recommander vivement. Merci, bien cordialement.
