This Richard Fadem edition has not only hundreds of pages of annotations, contextual commentary, historical references, analysis of why Bronte wrote what she did, but 102 fabulous water color paintings by Jane Freeman, and 20 reprints of Bronte's references to sketches found in 200 year old books, and vivid master artworks Bronte alluded to. All for a ridiculous low price. Only the gilded edging is missing. Not sure how that would work with a kindle, but you get the point.
These Richard Fadem annotated editions of classic English literature are the best you can find anywhere. And for a book written over 170 years ago, you really need this kind of annotation.
From the beginning we get an extensive review of Bronte and her times and how her masterpiece was received. Then the in-context word and phrase definitions, and Bronte thinking can go from one word to several pages depending on the complexity of her writing and word choice. A great deal of her allusions are biblical. I'm not religious myself so the Christian concepts and biblical references are greatly appreciated. Jane Freeman's wonderful water colors every few pages really helped me to visualize the scenes.
Some comments on the content. Like a lot of Americans I only know the great English books from movies and TV series. After 65 years I wanted to read the real thing to know how the story actually goes. This book is a page turner! Yes, a great deal of the writing uses out of date words, phrases and concepts but that is why I would only read an annotated version, and again, the Fadem works are beyond excellence. However, I also found many surprisingly modern concepts of love, relationships, personal growth and dialog between characters that just added to my fascination. I really wanted to keep reading late into the night just to see what happens next. On to the Richard Fadem edition of Emma now!
