Received this yesterday. Have just finished watching it. It is absolutely enthralling, and a joy to watch! We see Joanna as she travels to Mount Olympus, Corfu, and the surrounding islands. She deals with the history very well, and makes the whole thing interesting by putting her mark on the documentary. Subtitles are very helpful. It makes one want to explore the country further. I now have all the Joanna Lumley Travels on DVD. and have ordered "Joanna Lumley's India" on DVD (not out yet, but will be) to complete the set. Well done Joanna. Keep it up!

Joanna Lumley is very good at these middlebrow travel series. She is a mixture of the sophisticated and the naive, and shows great respect and empathy for the people she meets.
In this series of 4 programmes, she largely avoids the cliche Greek tourist locations; after informative visits to the Parthenon, Epidauros, Olympia and Delphi (at all of which she meets & talks to interesting & unusual characters) she branches off to less familiar aspects of Greece, which she clearly finds fascinating & awe-inspiring. An hospitable old lady who lives all alone in a deserted mountain village; another mountain village where the locals communicate by whistling like Clangers; a boatman who takes her to the Gates of Hades and watches approvingly as she casts coins and a pearl into the sea as offerings to the Ferryman and the Shades; an English man who is born-again worshipper of Apollo; an anglophile Italian multi-millionaire on the cricket-playing island of Corfu; some Moslem girls anxious to leave their remote northern village and live in a city; the last survivor of Greek/Turkish forced migrations in which his father was murdered; a highly popular and impressive left-wing mayor in Thessalonika.....the list goes on and on. By the end of it, as she strolls through magical-looking woods in Parnassus, you can believe with her that the gods & muses might still be lurking there!
Her visits to some of this islands are equally interesting, and she never seems to lose her sense of wonder. Her hankie comes out quite a bit, but it seems genuine.
I could watch this again and again.

I have now watched all of the Joanna Lumley series and enjoyed all of them. She has a natural charm, an appreciation of everything she discovers, and everyone she meets. I had no idea that Greece was so vast. There was a variety of topics, some serious, some amusing but always entertaining. Greece has had such a chequered existence regarding conflict and territorial disputes, but also a wealth of ancient history, architecture, classical literature and science. As always, we see a lot of Miss Lumley, but she brings a warmth and humour to her travels, and occasionally mentions her own past life, making her journey even more personal. I hope that she will do more in this fascinating series.
