I love travel documentaries - will happily watch them over and over. The Nile is the best of all the ITV series filmed with Joanna Lumley. I found the other series had a lot of 'filler' material which was either not that interesting or not something a travelor would be interested in doing if visiting that country.
A wonderfully informative DVD of the cradle of civilization beautifully portrayed in a very Girlie manner to areas I have visited myself and much tied up with my interests. Such a wonderful production that has tempted me to purchase the other DVDs of her other travels such as 'India' and 'The Silk Route' as seen by me during my World Travels.
Received this this morning. Subtitles very helpful. This is a very interesting documentary through 5 countries in which include Egypt, Sudan, Ethiopia, Uganda and Rwanda. She actually manages to find the source of the Nile itself. This is a journey of over 4000 miles, and a lot of it is inaccessible to holidaymakers, which makes this compelling viewing for a start. During the journey, she meets locals who work on the Nile. has wood smoke treatment, sees Olympic hopefuls, and gets up close to a Rhino calf playing with it's mother. Compelling viewing!
I loved every minute of this programme. What compelling viewing! I never knew the source of the Nile was in Rwanda, and how long and how fascinating her journey was going to be. Joanna has a lovely calm voice that guides you the through the beautiful scenery and she knows her subject well. I am going to buy all the other series she has made. She is a very good presenter and I'm surprised and disappointed that she hasn't been added to the list of presenters like Portillo and Palin who are continually praised and recognised as such.
Yet another documentary in which Miss Lumley excels and you get to see/visit places that you've always wanted to with her. She has this passion for describing things that carries you 'en voyage' with her and I enjoyed every minute of this DVD - highly recommended. I know it's been on TV but it's something that can be watched over and over.
Loved this series, so good to be able to buy it on DVD. Joanne makes her trip so interesting, and is not afraid to 'go with the flow' (sorry for the pun!!), try some Egyptian traditions and even lose her shoes and dignity when she struggles to the Nile's source! If you have not seen this series you are in for a treat.
Oh the pleasure of traveling with the charming Joanna Lumley on this long journey! Joanna undertakes this journey with her usual enthusiasm, grace and spirit, and the result is superb. In anyone else's hands this journey would be an incredible experience (even to the armchair traveler) but with this classy lady as our host it is beyond incredible. I especially appreciate her genuine respect for the local people she encounters, and the ease with which she interacts with them. This admirable trait of hers comes through in all three of the Lumley travel DVDs I own. It's pure joy to watch them multiple times! I hope she continues to make travel documentaries for a long time to come.
