I wanted to love this book. There is a good story within it that I wanted to read to the end. But it is a difficult book for me to review however, because something felt off. The detail is good, characterisation also, the plot intriguing but the second fire seemed like a rush job to end the book in such a way as to result in the death of the only person who could have told the truth, once the reader learns who really set the first which concluded in the death of a little boy. The reason (motive) for which was illogical and unrealistic. There's no real suspense as we're told before each revelation what to expect that revelation to be. And so for these reasons the story fell flat.

I really wanted to like this, but it wasn’t a page turner for me. On the plus side, the characterisations are very good and it’s intelligently written in a quiet, measured way. But I found it slow going, especially with the constant back and forth in timelines.

Though not my usual sort of reading, I quite enjoyed this book. Although it was pretty obvious what was going on and who was responsible, it was still enjoyable watching Ivy put all the pieces together. At the end I was quite glad that she had all the answers. I do wonder though if this is how all marriages of convenience felt.
