Killer Pad is a fun movie that works on all the levels that it aims for. It's way more comedy than horror, but theres a few things that seperate this from some of the low budget pap of nowadays. First up, this may not have the biggest budget ever but it has superb production values, you get that and you at least get us in for the ride. Secondly the main three guys in this movie are very likable and fairly decent actors. Finally this movie has 80s cheese written all over it. Indeed if this movie had been made then, there would be a lot of people on here and IMDB giving the movie more props. Englund has caught that cheesy atmosphere down to a tea, and if that was his intention then this movie is a success.
The story in a nutshell concerns 3 guys who move to LA and find a killer pad in the Hollywood hills, with such a great place they decide to hold a party. However they have a major problem- their basement is a portal to hell. These three central characters are pivotal to the success of this movie. They are infectious and quite frankly a hoot. Killer Pad is cheesy and isn't meant to be taken seriously.
This movie for what it is gets so many things right that most don't. We have a lot of different characters- the geek, the hell raiser turned priest, the catholic girls, the devil girls, we even get Joey Lawrence as himself and there's a super quick cameo by Lin Shaye who has been working with Englund for 30 years.
To conclude Englund got a backlash on this mostly because through his horror work fans thought that he could do better. But Englund chose a comedy horror over straight horror. Thing is is that he succeeded in a sub genre that is extremely difficult to get right. If you love your comedy horrors you should like this one.
