4.0 out of 5 starsA great device with a great price tag!
Reviewed in Australia on 8 August 2019
The all new Kindle 6" 2019 is an awesome little gadget with an even more awesome price tag!

I'm new to the Kindle life. This model is my very first. I bought the device a few weeks ago now, and have been thoroughly enjoying the whole experience.

I was initially drawn to this model due to its affordability. Being a poor, full time University student, I'm unable to afford the higher end models. However, this particular model does everything I want and need it to, all for a great price!

Here are my pros and cons from my experience so far. Cons first:

*I wish the outside casing material didn't have such a smooth, slippery and "papery" feel to it. It would be much easier to hold if the material had a silicone feel for better grip.
I assume that because this model has only been newly released, there aren't many cases/skins available for it yet.

*Unlike the new Paperwhite, this model isn't waterproof.

*Sometimes the operating system tends to be a little slow at times. Which can be a little frustrating.

*The sensitivity of the touch screen could be a bit more sensitive. I guess I'm more used to the touch screen sensitivity of my Samsung Galaxy S9 plus. But sometimes with the Kindle, I have to press a bit harder and longer.

*The way the screen refreshes could be a lot better. This is definitely my main complaint. I know that Kindles only use a very basic and simple operating system. But, I don't like how the text and images turn black for a moment before displaying the content. It makes it feel a bit "cheap", I guess.

And now for the pros.

Some of my favourite features, (most of which are available on all Kindles, I think) are:

*The new built-in front light makes reading your Kindle in any kind of light very easy. It's so much better for our eyes.

*If you don't know the definition of a word in your book, you can simply hold your finger down on that particular word to highlight it, and the Kindle will display a little pop-up box with the definition. This makes it so much easier and faster than having to leave your book and search for the definition elsewhere. You can simply get the definition very quickly, then continue your reading.

*You can turn on a feature that subtly underlines popular sentences, paragraphs, quotes etc that many other people have highlighted when reading the book. I find this pretty cool.

*You can easily write and save any notes you may want to keep anywhere in the book. You can access these notes and highlights in your Kindle library.

*Having access the Goodreads app on the Kindle is also great. You can also sync your Kindle and Goodreads accounts, so everything stays up to date.

*The battery life is amazing! A single charge lasts weeks, not days!

*The reading settings are fantastic and plentiful. You can fully customise the font type, font size and much, much more.

Overall, (especially for the low price), the all new Kindle 6" 2019 is a great little device. It does everything it's supposed to do, does everything I want it to do, and most of all allows me to escape into the magical world of reading anywhere at any time, all on a perfectly sized device that fits in the palm of my hand!

I would definitely recommend this product, especially for those new to Kindle reading.

2.0 out of 5 starsAudio books disabled for Australians
Reviewed in Australia on 16 July 2019
Unfortunately I am disappointed. I purchase a kindle for the first time after reading reviews saying it can play audio books and that is the main thing I need it for. After a frustrating three hours, it seems the audio book function is disabled for Australia. This is not specified anywhere on the Amazon page or elsewhere on the internet. Even the user manual covers how to listen to audio books, except the functions described are just missing.

I was also surprised by the blocky rendering of the font. I think it’s the kind of thing I would get used to over time, so not a deal breaker, but personally I expected better.

The turn page function sometimes bring up unexpected results - I don’t know what it’s doing but it’s not always going to the next page.

The weight is acceptable but I would expect future ones to be even lighter - I get pains in my hands sometimes and lighter is better.

The battery life using the configuration out-of-the-box is not weeks as advertised - I drained it significantly while setting it up and researching. You have to turn off the screen light and the wifi to extend the battery life.

Overall this is a pretty good device, but over priced considering you have to pay Amazon to get the books on it, and considering the Australian market isn’t permitted to use audio books.

5.0 out of 5 stars Love this product i recommend it.

This is a wonderful kindle. I must admit I was very reluctant to buy a new kindle as I have had my old side button one for a long time I think my daughter bought it for me for my 60th birthday that was over a decade ago. anyway I read the reviews and found good ones and not so good, to, I hate it. Well I got it anyway and I love it. For the people who are finding it skips pages , I will give you a hint. BE GENTLE, you only need to touch the screen softly, if you tap, It can be too hard and it will certainly skip a couple of pages. It doesn't take long to get used to it and for the front light alone it's worth persevering. Set your mind to it and you can conquer all problems my old granny used to say. I absolutely recommend this kindle and my new cover that turns my kindle off when I close it.
regards to all keep well Lorraine

1.0 out of 5 stars Disappointed that Amazon.com.au wasn't more clear about Bluetooth capabilities for Australia
Reviewed in Australia on 23 July 2020
Colour: BlackVerified Purchase
The Kindle itself is fine but very disappointed that there's no Bluetooth on the Australian version and that this wasn't more clearly stated on the Australian Amazon website (the website actually mentions Bluetooth with regards to VoiceView which is misleading...)

1.0 out of 5 stars Unhappy with new Kindle.
Reviewed in Australia on 12 July 2020
Colour: BlackVerified Purchase
Not happy with this Kindle, when I go to turn the page often two pages will turn, the Font changes without my asking. When I try to turn the Kindle off sometimes it takes ages to accept the close down request. I don't know if I can return this Kindle as I have thrown out all the packaging except the box it came in. In your description of the model you state that the battery will last for weeks, that is fine if you only turn it on occaisionally. I spend a lot of time reading and I find I have to recharge the Kindle at least every two days.

3.0 out of 5 stars old model was much better
Reviewed in Australia on 27 July 2020
Colour: BlackVerified Purchase
The touchscreen is nowhere near as good as the original model with no touch screen. Many older people use their kindle and find touch screens annoying. Surely its not too much to ask for at least one model that uses buttons like the original one did (mine unfortunately died after many good years). With my old kindle I could turn pages with the same hand as I used to hold the kindle - not so with the touch screen (at last for me). When the new kindle first wakes up the touch screen often does not work properly and a font window sometimes appears, changing my font size when I don't want it to. Then the pages won't turn until I restart the device. Also, the battery does not seem to last as long as my old model. PLEASE make a button model with no touch screen!

4.0 out of 5 stars Meh, its fine...
Reviewed in Australia on 19 July 2020
Colour: BlackVerified Purchase
I've given this only 3 stars, its my third kindle (coincidence with the rating???) anyway,
Pros
back light works ok
setting up was easy, sync'd with my account and downloaded my books without any issues

Cons
I find the touch screen not to be as responsive as my previous (prob 6-8 years old) model,
the on/off button doesn't always work, and
the battery life isn't as good as i remember my old model being when it was new.

Overall i don't understand why Amazon cant just keep this simple, people who use kindles don't need anything fancy or shiny just a good reliable e-reader.

1.0 out of 5 stars No free kindle unlimited for 3 months
Reviewed in Australia on 14 September 2020

Never received an email about the free 3 months. Had to contact support and they said I have to sign up for free 30 day trial and then they will charge me for the other two months and I will have to contact them to then refund it. It is a hassle and cant decide whether it is a dirty trick or just general incompetence.

Amazon Customer
3.0 out of 5 stars Nice, but not quite as advertised.
Reviewed in Australia on 3 February 2021
Colour: BlackVerified Purchase
In the listing details it has this...

> VoiceView screen reader, available over Bluetooth audio, provides spoken feedback allowing you to navigate your device and read books with text-to-speech (available in English only).

There is no bluetooth on this device, so no ability to use audio-books. I don't know if this is just because I'm in Australia or not, but I am a little annoyed as this seems like false advertising.

Also, battery life is not as good as claimed. It won't last weeks on a single charge. Mine typically needs a charge after a few days.

Finally the touch screen is very laggy and not very sensitive. If you're expecting something like the responsiveness of a tablet, you will be disapointed.

I'm used to it now though, so not overly bothered.

Overall though I don't regret my purchase. Even just as a reader I think it was worth the money. I just think they could have been more careful about the way they promote it.

3.0 out of 5 stars Nice, but could be better
Reviewed in Australia on 22 November 2020

The kindle is fairly light and easy to hold in one hand. I couldn’t really tell the difference between the lower resolution of this screen compared to that of the paperwhite.
The plastic this is made from does have a very ‘cheap’ feel to it, and the device feels/sounds a little ‘hollow’ further adding to the cheap feeling.

Additionally, using microUSB for a device in 2020 just seems so backwards. Amazon need to get with the times and start implementing USB-C across their entire kindle range.

DigitalDundie
5.0 out of 5 stars Recommended device for people with ADD/ADHD
Reviewed in Australia on 14 February 2022
Colour: BlackVerified Purchase
I had a late diagnosis of Attention-deficit disorder but all signs showed I was a “space-cadet” since I was a kid. I struggled with reading, often getting lost on a page. Those of you genuinely have the same symptoms as mines, you’d know that you’d be better off reading with physical books and not digital devices. As ebooks will replace printed versions in a decade, a distraction-free and minimalistic eReader like the classic Kindle devices would suit you.

The characters per line and font-size are excellent enough to prevent your eyes from jumping on the page. You’re reading in chunks, which is ideal, especially if you deal with those ADHD boom and bust moments. It’s helpful if you set the page number in terms of percentage completed to keep you motivated. These features will probably be common to all Kindle’s classic devices, but I got a Kindle (2019) 10th generation for myself. The bottom line is if you have ADD/ADHD, I’d choose an eReader instead of a tablet.

I’m thrilled with the built-in light as I find the old generations as dull without one. It doesn’t hurt my eyes compared to staring at a computer, tablet or mobile screens. It could do better with tap gestures when flipping pages, distinguishing a bookmark tap from accessing settings or navigation menus, and adjusting the length of highlighted text.

Disclaimer: The device itself will not address your ADD/ADHD issues. You need to have strategies to improve your reading comprehension skills to get its full advantage. Consult your ADHD coach, counsellor or doctor.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Light is Really Useful
Reviewed in Australia on 11 December 2020
Colour: BlackVerified Purchase
I've always liked the basic Kindle, and the addition of a light did put me off at first. I know that reading back-lit devices can interfere with sleep patterns. However the light can be turned off, using the brightness control.

We tend to have power outages in the summer, due to thunderstorms. I think this light is going to be really useful!
